Nova Scotia's Commitment to Golf Ban Amidst Protected Land Discussions

Nova Scotia's Commitment to Golf Ban Amidst Protected Land Discussions

Post by : Meena Hassan

In a firm stance, Natural Resources Minister Kim Masland of Nova Scotia has stated that the government will not permit a prominent golf developer to establish a new course within a provincial park in Cape Breton. However, she remains receptive to considering other proposals concerning protected lands.

This position has attracted criticism from the Opposition, who believe the government is sending conflicting messages. NDP Leader Claudia Chender argued that it is contradictory to protect land while also being willing to discuss development in provincial parks.

The Toronto-based Cabot firm has attempted on three occasions to create a course at West Mabou Beach, a proposal previously dismissed by Premier Tim Houston as impracticable and contrary to public interest. Masland reiterated her disinterest in the project, even if Cabot presents a revised plan.

Masland emphasized that a responsible government should be open to hearing various ideas, including those relating to protected areas, clarifying that listening does not equate to approval.

When queried about the definition of protected land in the context of development conversations, Masland asserted that the protected status remains intact regardless of discussions. She underlined that provincial guidelines define protected areas as spaces that are legally managed to ensure the long-term conservation of nature.

Chender criticized the government’s dual approach of rejecting a golf proposal in one area while remaining open to others, advocating for stricter legislation to protect these lands more effectively.

Liberal MLA Derek Mombourquette also contended that allowing development discussions undermines the true protection of these lands, accusing the government of a willingness to reverse previous protection decisions.

Nova Scotia has pledged to protect 20 percent of its land and waters by 2030, with 13.6 percent currently secured as of July 2024. Earlier this November, the province announced an additional 12.7 square kilometers across 16 parks and wilderness areas would gain protected status.
