Oman Celebrates Al Busaidi Dynasty Foundation Day

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Oman is preparing to celebrate the Al Busaidi Dynasty Foundation Day on November 20 — a date that holds deep national importance. The day marks the beginning of the Al Busaidi rule under Sayyid Ahmed bin Said in 1744, who unified the nation and built the foundation of Omani sovereignty. This moment in history represents not just the start of a dynasty but the beginning of modern Oman’s unity, stability, and strength.

Sayyid Ahmed bin Said, the Founding Imam of the Al Busaidi State, played a central role in unifying Oman. His leadership came at a time of great internal and external challenges. Through courage, strategy, and wisdom, he consolidated Omani lands and defended them from foreign threats. His establishment of national sovereignty remains the cornerstone of Oman’s independent political identity. Historians note that his rule laid the groundwork for centuries of leadership that continues today under Sultan Haitham bin Tarik.

In his royal speech on January 11, His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik announced November 20 as Oman’s National Day, linking it to the founding of the Al Busaidi State. His Majesty emphasized that this date symbolizes the dynasty’s enduring service to Oman since 1744. He praised the Founding Imam for uniting the Omani nation and defending its freedom and dignity. The declaration serves as both a tribute to history and a promise to continue Oman’s legacy of progress.

Dr. Nasser bin Abdullah Al Saqri from Sultan Qaboos University highlighted the significance of Imam Ahmed bin Said’s leadership in shaping Omani sovereignty. He explained that the Imam’s governance principles established the idea of a unified, independent state capable of handling both internal and external challenges. His rule became a living model for leadership and nation-building, inspiring future generations to value national unity and resilience.

The Al Busaidi Dynasty has led Oman for nearly three centuries, guiding it through periods of expansion and modernization. Researcher Dr. Bahiya bint Said Al Athobi explained that after Imam Ahmed’s reign, Oman flourished under Sultan Said bin Sultan, who expanded the country’s influence across the Indian Ocean and East Africa. Later, under Sultan Qaboos bin Said, Oman experienced a remarkable renaissance, modernizing education, healthcare, infrastructure, and diplomacy while promoting peace and neutrality worldwide.

Under His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, Oman continues to move forward with its Renewed Renaissance. Since assuming power in 2020, His Majesty has focused on modernizing governance and implementing Oman Vision 2040, which seeks to diversify the economy beyond oil and strengthen sectors like tourism, logistics, and manufacturing. The vision also prioritizes youth empowerment and human capital development, ensuring Oman’s future remains strong and sustainable.

A defining feature of Omani history has been the close bond between the rulers and their people. According to historians, this relationship is built on trust, loyalty, and open communication. Leaders have long maintained dialogue with citizens through councils and community meetings, listening to their needs and aspirations. This tradition of mutual respect has helped Oman remain stable and united, even during challenging times.

Women of the Al Busaidi family have also played significant roles throughout history. Dr. Ahlam bint Hamoud Al Jahwari noted that figures like Al Sayyida Moza bint Imam Ahmed bin Said showed exceptional political and military leadership, even serving as regent of Oman. Others, such as Al Sayyida Salma, contributed to documenting Omani history, while Al Sayyida Fatima bint Ali Al Busaidi played a key role in the upbringing of Sultan Said bin Taimour. Their contributions highlight the enduring influence of women in Omani governance and culture.

Researcher Dr. Yunis bin Jameel Al Nu’mani explained that geography shaped Oman’s destiny as a seafaring nation. The Founding Imam revived Oman’s naval strength, extending its influence over the coasts and fostering trade routes reaching Asia and Africa. This maritime legacy continues through Oman’s ship Shabab Oman II, which sails the world promoting messages of peace, friendship, and cultural understanding — symbols of Oman’s long-standing openness to the world.

Omani scholars agree that celebrating the Al Busaidi Dynasty Foundation Day helps strengthen national identity and pride. Dr. Hanan bint Mahmoud Ahmed emphasized that recalling historical events deepens citizens’ understanding of their roots and reinforces their sense of belonging. These celebrations remind Omanis of the resilience and achievements of their ancestors, ensuring that history remains a guiding light for future generations.

From Imam Ahmed bin Said’s unification of Oman in 1744 to Sultan Haitham’s leadership today, the Al Busaidi Dynasty has continually shaped the nation’s identity. Through centuries of change, the dynasty’s values of justice, unity, and wisdom have guided Oman’s journey. As the nation celebrates 281 years of this legacy on November 20, Oman stands proud — honoring its past while confidently shaping its future under the vision of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik.
