Oman has reaffirmed its steady progress in advancing the rights and empowerment of Omani women, highlighting ongoing efforts to build a fair and cohesive society that guarantees women’s full legal and social rights. The commitment was expressed during the 70th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in New York.
Dr. Omar Said Al Kathiri, Oman’s Permanent Representative to the UN, presented the country’s achievements under national strategies aligned with international commitments, including the principle of equality before the law enshrined in Oman’s Basic Law and national legislation protecting women’s rights.
Oman’s delegation underlined that women now participate across all sectors of national development, with increased representation in areas such as education, public service, research, and financial activities. The government has expanded social protection coverage and endorsed equal opportunities in educational attainment and public candidacy.
Officials noted that Oman’s legal framework ensures women’s access to justice and legal protection, reflecting the state’s commitment to sustainable development goals related to gender equality. This includes creating procedures that uphold women’s rights to effective legal recourse and transparent judicial services.
The Sultanate also stressed the role of women as active partners in economic and social progress, with nearly half of those benefiting from national social programmes being women — a sign of inclusive growth and shared participation in Oman’s development goals.
Oman’s report to the UN highlighted ongoing initiatives designed to promote women’s leadership and involvement in national decision‑making processes, showing sustained commitment to gender equality both domestically and in its global engagements.
