Oman Enhances International Relations at Annual Diplomatic Gathering

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Oman’s Foreign Ministry convened its sixth annual meeting at the Diplomatic Club, bringing together Ambassadors and Heads of Diplomatic Missions and International Organizations that are accredited to the Sultanate. This assembly served as a vital forum for discussing pressing regional matters, evaluating Oman’s national development, and deliberating on Oman Vision 2040 alongside the nation’s foreign policy.

Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi expressed his appreciation for the participating missions, acknowledging their persistent efforts towards strengthening bilateral relations with Oman. He highlighted the establishment of new diplomatic missions in recent years, including embassies from Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Ukraine, as well as the opening of a World Bank office. These developments signify Oman’s expanding diplomatic footprint and collaborative ties with global organizations.

Sayyid Badr addressed Oman Vision 2040, emphasizing its aspirational strategies in areas such as international trade, foreign direct investment, collaborative projects, and technological advancements, particularly in the context of a green transition. He underscored these initiatives as fundamental to Oman’s forthcoming phases of growth, with a goal of positioning the Sultanate as a top destination for living, working, investing, and tourism.

He also discussed future plans for implementing a personal income tax, describing it as a significant part of a long-term strategy to diversify income sources beyond oil and gas. This tax framework is intended to ensure a fair contribution from citizens, thereby fostering social cohesion and enhancing quality of life.

The Foreign Minister noted Oman’s ratification of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which he regarded as a pivotal step in aligning the nation with international human rights norms, thus supporting domestic development efforts.

Regarding regional challenges, Sayyid Badr spoke on the situation in Palestine, particularly highlighting the ongoing crises in the Gaza Strip. He condemned Israel’s actions as violations of international law, labeling them a significant threat to regional stability. He expressed praise for nations that have acknowledged Palestine’s sovereignty, reinforcing the cause for Palestinian self-determination.

In his remarks, he addressed the ceasefire agreement established on October 9, extending thanks to the United States, Qatar, Egypt, Türkiye, and Palestinian leaders for their roles. He condemned Israel’s transgressions against the ceasefire, which have resulted in considerable Palestinian casualties, casting doubt on the agreement's integrity. Sayyid Badr called upon the international community to hold Israel accountable for its actions and to safeguard civilian lives.

Additionally, the Foreign Minister emphasized the need for authentic Palestinian representation in any political resolution. He affirmed that self-determination inherently includes the choice of representatives, insisting that negotiations regarding Gaza must not sideline any Palestinian factions. He stressed the necessity of dialogue and inclusivity to cultivate unified leadership and foster enduring peace.

In closing, Sayyid Badr thanked the Ambassadors and Heads of Missions for their commitment to strengthening cooperation with Oman. The attendees expressed gratitude for a fruitful meeting and reaffirmed their dedication to nurturing their partnership with the Sultanate.
