Karung Onler Responds to Mary Kom's Claims of Financial Misconduct

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Karung Onler, the ex-husband of Olympic bronze medalist Mary Kom, has categorically denied her accusations that he misappropriated her earnings and exerted control over properties purchased with her funds. He labels her assertions as unsubstantiated and counters with serious allegations against the celebrated boxer.

In a statement to news agency IANS, Onler revealed that the marital troubles surfaced over ten years ago. He alleged that Mary Kom had an affair with a junior boxer back in 2013, which led to disputes within their families before a resolution was found.

Further, Onler claimed that since 2017, Mary Kom has been involved with someone linked to the Mary Kom Boxing Academy. He asserts that he has WhatsApp messages and other supporting material but opted not to disclose them for years out of consideration for their family.

Onler indicated that while he supports Mary Kom's right to move forward after their separation, he vehemently opposes being publicly accused of financial misconduct.

“She can remarry if she wishes. I have no objection. However, she must provide proof if she accuses me of theft,” he stated, emphasizing that Mary Kom should substantiate her claims regarding the alleged theft of money or property.

Addressing the allegations about his financial status, Onler highlighted his modest living situation in a rented property in Delhi and challenged others to verify his bank balances.

“Mary claims I stole ₹5 crore. If that’s the case, where’s the evidence? My circumstances speak for themselves. I don’t live like someone with that kind of wealth,” he added.

As for property ownership, Onler stated that if land had been transferred to him, Mary Kom would have legal documentation to back that up. He noted that their divorce was amicable and that legal proceedings are still in progress.

He mentioned that he refrained from legal disputes for the sake of their children, indicating that public accusations were both unwarranted and damaging.

Onler articulated his long-standing support for Mary Kom, claiming he played an instrumental role in establishing the Mary Kom Boxing Academy. He expressed deep emotional distress over feeling “used and discarded.”

Regarding their children, Onler declared his right to maintain a relationship and dismissed allegations of his sole struggle with alcohol, suggesting these matters should remain private.

He also alleged that despite experiencing an injury before the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Mary Kom visited Mumbai and allegedly continued her relationship, asserting he has proof.

Mary Kom and Onler got married in 2005 and share four children. They divorced in 2023.

Previously, Mary Kom accused Onler of betraying her trust, alleging he borrowed money against her property and transferred assets into his name, causing her to lose land in Manipur. She claimed she became aware of this situation during her recovery from an injury prior to the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Mary Kom indicated that she wished to keep the divorce confidential but felt compelled to address the public discreditation she faced over the past year.

Both parties continue to vehemently deny each other’s assertions, thereby maintaining the public interest in this ongoing dispute.
