Malaysia has officially commenced the introduction of its newly revamped international passport, which now features advanced security features and an extended 10-year validity option. This upgraded passport is being phased in at 69 Immigration Department offices across the nation as well as in seven overseas locations.
Launched on June 30, the new passport offers Malaysian citizens a choice between a traditional five-year passport priced at RM200 or a 10-year passport at RM350. Officials emphasize that current passport holders are not required to obtain the new version until their existing passports expire.
Phased Introduction Across the Country
The initial rollout commenced on July 1 at selected Immigration offices, including locations in Putrajaya, Jalan Duta, KLIA, Melaka, Seremban, Kelana Jaya, and various Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) branches.
Other Immigration offices throughout Peninsular Malaysia, as well as in Sabah and Sarawak, will also start issuing the new passport in July and early August. Overseas Malaysian Immigration offices in cities like Jeddah, Jakarta, Hong Kong, Singapore, Melbourne, London, and New York are expected to follow suit during August.
Updated Features and Application Process
The redesigned passport includes strengthened anti-counterfeiting measures and enhanced security features to align with global travel standards. Existing passports can still be utilized until their expiration date, granted they remain valid for at least six months before any international travel.
For those opting for the new 10-year passport, an in-person visit to a passport issuance office is currently required, as online renewals are limited to the five-year option available through the MyOnline Passport service.
Highlights of Malaysia's New Passport
The new passport offers an extended 10-year validity along with the traditional five-year version, featuring improved security technologies aimed at enhancing identity protection and compliance with modern travel requirements. This longer validity also offers a cost-effective solution for frequent travelers, reducing the frequency of passport renewals.
Where to Apply for the New Passport?
The introduction is rolled out gradually through 69 Immigration Department offices across Malaysia, including headquarters, state offices, and UTC branches. Malaysian nationals residing abroad will also be able to apply at selected Immigration attaché offices in countries such as Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, the UK, and the US as the rollout progresses.
Can Applicants Renew Online for the 10-Year Passport?
Currently, online renewals are only available for the five-year passport. Malaysians wishing to obtain the 10-year passport must personally visit an Immigration office until the online system is updated.
Increased Replacement Fees for Lost Passports
Authorities have reminded passport holders to secure their travel documents, particularly for those choosing the new 10-year passport. Replacement fees for lost passports are significantly higher than fees for standard renewals, with increasing penalties for multiple losses.
The government encourages travelers to safeguard their passports to avoid undue expenses and facilitate smoother international experiences.
The new international passport represents a significant upgrade in Malaysia's passport history, introducing enhanced security features, extended validity options, and improved traveler convenience while complying with international standards in aviation and border security.
This phased implementation is designed to ensure a seamless transition across all passport issuance centers. The launch of the 10-year option aims to minimize renewal frequency, enhance service efficiency, and provide greater flexibility for Malaysians engaged in work, education, business, and tourism.
Government Urges Planning Ahead
Authorities advise travelers planning any international trips to verify the validity of their passports well in advance, as many countries require passports to be valid for at least six months. Citizens interested in the 10-year passport are encouraged to track the rollout schedule to see when it will be available at their closest Immigration office.
The government confirmed that the phased rollout will continue until all designated offices in Malaysia and selected overseas missions are equipped to issue the improved passport.
