OTT Platforms Transform Perceptions of Men's Mental Health

OTT Platforms Transform Perceptions of Men's Mental Health

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

For years, cinema and television depicted male characters as stoic and emotionally detached, sculpting societal expectations around masculinity that discourage men from showing vulnerability. The World Health Organization highlights that many men shy away from seeking professional support amidst anxiety, depression, or stress, primarily due to the fear of being perceived as weak.

However, a notable shift is occurring across OTT platforms. Modern series are now showcasing male figures who openly share their emotions, pursue therapy, and confront their mental health challenges rather than suppress them. This trend is resonating with younger viewers, fostering a newfound appreciation for emotional intelligence among men. Experts identify this movement as the “accountability aesthetic,” which champions emotional responsibility as a strength.

Arpita Kohli, a psychologist at PSRI Hospital, emphasizes the media's significant role in either perpetuating damaging stereotypes or promoting healthier portrayals. When on-screen male characters seek assistance, it invites genuine dialogue surrounding mental health, illustrating that experiencing confusion or fear is completely normal.

Dr. Pavitra Shankar, a psychiatrist at Aakash Healthcare, shared insights on the silent struggles many young men endure under the facade of stability. Financial pressures, job-related stress, and the burden of familial expectations often compels them to remain silent about their feelings. Witnessing on-screen portrayals of male vulnerability can help alleviate the stigma, reminding audiences that they too require support.

Shows like The Summer I Turned Pretty and Maxton Hall emphasize emotional development in male leads. In The Summer I Turned Pretty's second season, Conrad’s journey through anger and emotional turmoil amid his mother’s health crisis leads him to recognize the value of therapy. Similarly, in Maxton Hall, James Beaufort attends therapy following trauma, illustrating the importance of seeking help as a constructive step in life.

This narrative style proves impactful, helping young viewers regard mental health care as a standard practice. Dr. Kohli notes that OTT has ventured into a domain mainstream cinema often shies away from, showcasing men expressing sadness, fear, and growth without resorting to clichéd heroism.

The dialogue extends beyond scripted characters. Numerous public figures, like actor Arjun Kapoor, openly advocate for therapy, emphasizing the normalcy of emotional expression. Imran Khan reflects on the past reluctance to discuss mental health while praising the candidness of today’s youth. Director Karan Johar has shared his therapeutic journey to address body image issues and long-standing emotional turmoil.

Despite this progress, some industry voices believe that Indian cinema still has much ground to cover. Influencer Nikhil Taneja noted the prevalence of hyper-masculine portrayals, while actor Amol Parashar expressed a preference for narratives that inspire courage and honesty.

As streaming services continue to spotlight male emotional acknowledgment, the aspiration is to cultivate understanding that expressing feelings is not a weakness but a fundamental human trait. These narratives may spark a shift towards more open dialogues, empathy, and healthier coping strategies for stress and mental challenges.
