Death Toll Escalates in Pangkor Boat Disaster

Post by : Shakul

The tragic capsizing of a migrant boat near Pulau Pangkor has led to the recovery of three more bodies, heightening the urgency of ongoing search efforts. Malaysian authorities confirmed that the deceased individuals are believed to be undocumented Indonesian migrants from a boat that sank while en route to Malaysia. This grim discovery brings the total number of confirmed victims to 30, with rescue teams tirelessly working to locate the remaining missing individuals.

According to DSP Mazre Che Mahmod from Marine Police Region One Operations Command, the Royal Malaysian Navy's KD Sri Indera Sakti vessel located the bodies approximately 20 nautical miles from the initial site of the incident around 6 pm during rescue operations near Pulau Pangkor and Lumut in Perak state.

Investigations are currently in motion to ascertain the identities of the recently discovered victims. It is suspected that these individuals were part of a group of undocumented Indonesian migrants who had departed from Kisaran, Indonesia, on May 9, before their vessel capsized in Malaysian waters on Monday.

The incident has sent shockwaves through local communities and raised alarms regarding perilous illegal migration routes between Indonesia and Malaysia. Officials estimate that 37 migrants were aboard the vessel at the time of the disaster, and so far, 23 individuals have been rescued since operations commenced on May 11.

Search and rescue efforts resumed early Wednesday, receiving substantial support from various Malaysian agencies. Currently involved are the Marine Police, the Royal Malaysian Navy, and the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency. These teams are employing a range of marine vessels, patrol boats, and aerial surveillance to cover extensive maritime areas in search of those still unaccounted for.

Resources deployed include two Marine Police boats, three Royal Malaysian Navy ships, and three from the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, notably KM Malawali, BENTENG 1203, and a Bombardier CL415MP aircraft based out of Subang Air Station. Authorities have confirmed that difficult sea conditions and vast search zones are hindering recovery efforts, though teams remain determined to find all missing persons.

The migrant boat tragedy off Pulau Pangkor serves as a stark reminder of the perils faced by undocumented migrants seeking safer economic prospects abroad. Malaysian authorities are dedicated to ongoing rescue operations while concurrently investigating the circumstances surrounding this illegal endeavor. Efforts continue to locate the remaining individuals and support the survivors impacted by this unfortunate event.
