Paraguay Strengthens Its Diplomatic Bond with Taiwan Amidst Chinese Pressure

Post by : Shakul

In the face of rising pressure from China, Paraguay has robustly reaffirmed its diplomatic connection with Taiwan. During a significant visit to Taipei, President Santiago Peña underscored his nation’s unwavering support for Taiwan while meeting with Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te amidst various bilateral engagements. This visit occurred shortly after China publicly urged Paraguay to terminate its formal ties with Taiwan in favor of Beijing.

Paraguay stands as the sole South American country officially recognizing Taiwan, part of a small group of just 12 nations globally maintaining diplomatic relations with the island. China views Taiwan as part of its territory, intensifying its campaign to isolate Taipei by persuading allied nations to switch allegiance to Beijing. In tandem with political pressure, military activities around Taiwan have escalated, heightening regional anxieties.

During a ceremonial event to honor the military outside Taiwan’s presidential office, President Peña remarked on the significance of Paraguay’s friendship and strategic partnership with Taiwan. He noted that the two countries share vital democratic values, such as human rights and freedom, which only serve to fortify their relationship. Peña reasserted his commitment to advocating for Taiwan’s involvement in the international sphere and enhancing bilateral collaboration moving forward.

In response, Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te expressed gratitude to Paraguay for its steadfast support amid escalating external pressures from China. Lai emphasized that the bond between Taiwan and Paraguay continues to strengthen through solid political trust and an expanding array of cooperative projects. The leaders also participated in the signing of several bilateral agreements, notably concerning investments in an upcoming artificial intelligence computing center.

These diplomatic affirmations emerged immediately after Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian pressed Paraguay to “align with the correct historical path” by severing its relationship with Taiwan. Chinese officials reiterated that the “One China” principle is paramount in global diplomatic interactions, highlighting that over 180 countries currently recognize Beijing over Taipei. However, Paraguay has chosen to maintain its commitment to Taiwan’s international stance.

During discussions, President Peña advocated for Taiwan’s right to self-determination based on democratic values and fairness. He contended that excluding Taiwan from key global organizations, including the United Nations, is inequitable and undermines the integrity of international bodies. His statements illustrate Paraguay’s ongoing alignment with Taiwan’s aspirations in the face of Chinese opposition.

Diplomatic strains around Taiwan are escalating as China intensifies its efforts to diminish Taipei's international partnerships. Notably, Taiwan has lost substantial allies such as Honduras this year after establishing relationships with China. Despite these pressures, Paraguay’s latest declarations signal that some nations firmly uphold strong connections with Taiwan, rooted in mutual political values and the pursuit of long-lasting strategic partnerships.
