Leaders of Perikatan Nasional (PN) in Perlis have categorically dismissed allegations regarding a potential no-confidence motion against Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah, labeling these claims as unfounded and politically driven. The rumors emerged following the unforeseen delay of the state legislative assembly session, igniting speculation about alleged discord within the ruling coalition.
PN Perlis chairman Shahidan Kassim confronted the allegations head-on, asserting that there has been no consensus or plan to initiate a no-confidence motion. He urged critics to substantiate their allegations, asserting that the unfolding narrative does not reflect the governance dynamics within the state.
Shahidan reaffirmed that the relationship between PAS and Bersatu—key players in the Perlis governance—continues to be harmonious and collaborative. He noted that the PAS central leadership has made it unequivocally clear that they will back the current administration until the next election, dismissing any speculation about imminent leadership changes.
He further highlighted that PAS possesses a majority in the state assembly, suggesting that if there were indeed intentions to replace the Menteri Besar, a no-confidence vote would not be necessary. Such a change could be enacted more directly, but he reiterated that maintaining unity and stability is their foremost priority.
Shahidan also conveyed directives from Abdul Hadi Awang, who has encouraged party members to bolster internal solidarity and respect central authority decisions. This guidance underscores their resolve to prevent unnecessary political friction and to prioritize effective governance.
The controversy heightened when six PAS assemblymen publicly requested clarification on the assembly session postponement. Their remarks sparked further conjecture regarding dissatisfaction within the coalition. However, Shahidan clarified that these assemblymen were merely voicing their individual concerns as elected representatives, not an official party statement.
Conversely, Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah has refuted claims that the assembly's delay was a result of fears of being ousted. He clarified that the postponement was based on administrative recommendations aligned with legal frameworks, aimed at ensuring seamless governance. This situation underscores how quickly political speculation can grow, even when the coalition's leaders assert stability and unity remain intact.
