Perplexity AI Offers $34.5 Billion to Buy Google’s Chrome Browser

Perplexity AI Offers $34.5 Billion to Buy Google’s Chrome Browser

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Perplexity AI, a young tech company, has made a big offer to buy Google Chrome, the most-used internet browser in the world. The offer is for $34.5 billion, and it has surprised many people in the tech world.

This offer is interesting because Perplexity is a much smaller company than Google. It is only about three years old and is valued at around $14 to $18 billion. Still, Perplexity believes it can buy Chrome with the help of investors. Some big investment funds have said they are ready to provide all the money needed for the deal.

Let’s understand this news in simple words.

What is Perplexity AI?

Perplexity AI is a technology company that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to answer questions, just like a smart search engine. It is trying to compete with big companies like Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI in the AI space.

Perplexity has made its own AI browser and wants to grow quickly. To do that, it needs more users and more attention. That is why it is trying to buy Chrome.

What is Chrome?

Google Chrome is a web browser owned by Google. It is used by over 3 billion people around the world. This makes it the most popular browser in the world.

Many people open the internet through Chrome and search for things using Google. So, Chrome plays a big role in helping Google make money from ads and data.

What is Perplexity Offering?

Perplexity has made an all-cash offer of $34.5 billion. That means it is not offering company shares or part-ownership in exchange. It wants to pay the full amount in money.

Even though Perplexity is smaller than Google, it has told the public that it has support from large financial groups who are ready to fund the deal.

What Promises Has Perplexity Made?

To make the deal more acceptable to users and regulators, Perplexity has made some promises:

  1. Keep Chrome’s open-source system (called Chromium) free for everyone to use and improve.

  2. Invest $3 billion in Chrome and Chromium over the next 2 years to make it better.

  3. Keep Google Search as the default search engine in Chrome, so users don’t face big changes.

  4. Do not make any secret or hidden changes in the browser. Everything will remain open and clear to users.

Why Is This Happening Now?

Last year, a U.S. court ruled that Google has too much control over internet search. The court said this is not good for fair competition. It found that Google has been using Chrome and deals with phone makers to stay number one in search.

Now, the U.S. Justice Department is asking the court to make Google sell Chrome to reduce its power in the market. Google is fighting the decision and plans to appeal.

But this has created a chance for other companies like Perplexity to step in and offer to buy Chrome. If the court decides Chrome must be sold, the judge may look at buyers like Perplexity.

What Is Perplexity’s Real Goal?

Perplexity wants to win the AI search race. It is building its own smart browser and search engine using AI.

If it gets Chrome and its 3 billion users, it will have a massive advantage. It will get more people using its system, more data to train its AI, and more chances to grow fast.

Also, owning a browser will help Perplexity control how users access the web — something that Google now controls through Chrome.

What Is Perplexity’s Plan for Chrome?

If the deal happens, Perplexity says:

  • It will continue to update Chrome and add new AI tools.

  • It will not remove Google Search immediately. Users can still choose what search engine they want.

  • It will make Chrome better for developers and users.

They have also said they want to work with Google during the change, not against them.

What Does Google Say?

So far, Google has not replied to Perplexity’s offer. It has not shown any interest in selling Chrome. In fact, experts say Google may not want to sell Chrome at all.

That’s because Chrome is very important for Google’s business. It helps bring users to Google Search, which brings in ad money. It also helps Google collect data to improve its AI systems.

What Do Experts Say?

  • Many experts say that Perplexity’s offer is too low. Chrome could be worth $50 to $70 billion, or even more, they say.

  • Still, they agree that it is a bold and clever move by Perplexity.

  • Some believe that even if the deal does not happen, it helps Perplexity get attention and show it’s serious about becoming a big player.

What Happens Next?

Right now, the court is still deciding whether Google must sell Chrome or not. If the court says yes, there will be more companies wanting to buy Chrome.

Already, names like OpenAI, Yahoo, and Apollo Global Management have been mentioned as possible buyers. So, there may be a big competition.

Even if the court agrees to a sale, the legal process could take years because of appeals and long procedures.

What Is Perplexity Doing in the Meantime?

Perplexity is moving fast. It recently launched a browser called Comet, which already uses AI to give smart answers, summaries, and search results. This shows they are ready to grow with or without Chrome.
