The Philippine government has issued a stern warning to Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa about the consequences of attempting to flee the nation, as the International Criminal Court has released an arrest warrant linked to the country’s violent anti-drug initiatives. Authorities emphasized that any actions to exit the Philippines will be treated with the utmost seriousness and prompt measures will be enforced.
Justice Secretary Fredderick Vida confirmed that the arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court has been officially acknowledged by Manila. Nevertheless, the enforcement of this warrant remains on hold pending a ruling from the Philippine Supreme Court regarding Dela Rosa’s legal challenge against the warrant’s legitimacy.
Dela Rosa, a key supporter of former President Rodrigo Duterte, reportedly evaded arrest earlier this week by seeking refuge in the Philippine Senate. Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano is said to have intervened, preventing law enforcement from executing the arrest at that moment. The senator subsequently left the premises without disclosing his whereabouts.
The ICC unsealed the arrest warrant on Monday, accusing Dela Rosa and other suspects of crimes against humanity for their involvement in the killings during Duterte’s anti-drug efforts. Human rights advocates have long condemned this campaign for reportedly utilizing extrajudicial killings targeting alleged drug offenders.
Having led the Philippine National Police from 2016 to 2018 during the early phase of Duterte’s contentious drug initiative, Dela Rosa transitioned into politics and was elected to the Senate in 2019, later securing a second term.
In response, border agencies and law enforcement from around the country have been directed to monitor any potential attempts by Dela Rosa to exit the Philippines. Officials warned that any international travel attempts would trigger immediate legal action and arrest protocols.
This situation has amplified the political climate in the Philippines, where Duterte's supporters continue to advocate for the anti-drug campaign as a means to combat crime. Critics argue, however, that the initiative has resulted in numerous innocent casualties and emphasize the need for accountability.
Former President Duterte himself was detained last year and is currently awaiting trial at The Hague in the Netherlands for similar charges. Dela Rosa has expressed a preference to confront any allegations against him in the Philippines instead of facing an international court.
