Prabowo Acknowledges Issues in Indonesia's Free Meal Initiative

Post by : Shakul

Indonesian leader Prabowo Subianto has openly recognized that the free meal initiative is undergoing substantial challenges despite its widespread implementation across the nation.

During an address in East Java, Prabowo remarked that the nutritious meal program “is fraught with numerous issues” and admitted the complications involved in administrating a large-scale national effort.

Launched in January 2025, this initiative aims to tackle malnutrition and food insecurity among children and vulnerable populations. The government has stated that by March 2026, over 61 million people have benefited from the program.

Nonetheless, the initiative has drawn criticism after reports of thousands falling ill, attributed to hygiene issues in the distribution of meals. Activists and critics have urged for enhanced oversight and a temporary halt in certain regions.

Financial strains have also impacted the program, as Indonesia has diminished meal distributions from six to five days a week to conserve around 40 trillion rupiah amid the economic fallout from the conflict in the Middle East.

Defending the program, Prabowo emphasized that many ordinary citizens, particularly farmers and families, have requested the continuation of the free meal initiative, which supports children's nutritional needs.

Simultaneously, Indonesia Corruption Watch has lodged a complaint regarding suspected irregularities in halal certification linked to the program's funding, with reports suggesting discrepancies nearing 50 million dollars.

Prabowo warned that individuals found abusing their authority or breaching regulations related to the project will face strict disciplinary measures and dismissal from their positions.

Indonesia continues to grapple with child malnutrition and stunting issues, with over 20 percent of children reportedly suffering from long-standing nutritional deficiencies.
