Schools in Puducherry, Tamil Nadu Closed Amid Heavy Rain Alerts

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Due to anticipated heavy rainfall in the Union Territory, schools and colleges in Puducherry and Karaikal were closed on Tuesday, November 18, 2025. Similar measures were taken in Tamil Nadu's Cuddalore and Villupuram districts, which declared school holidays following light to moderate rainfall on November 17, 2025. The rainfall is attributed to current weather systems affecting the Bay of Bengal and nearby Sri Lanka, marking the end of a recent dry phase while rejuvenating the Northeast monsoon.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued yellow alerts for eight southern Tamil Nadu districts, including Tirunelveli, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, and Theni, urging precautionary action. Forecasters indicated that while a low-pressure area in the southwest Bay of Bengal is not expected to strengthen significantly, a second low-pressure system anticipated later in the week could lead to sustained heavy rainfall throughout the state.

Officials from the RMC have highlighted that heavy rain is projected to be particularly intense in Mayiladuthurai and Cuddalore districts from November 19 to 20. The weather intensity is expected to rise from November 22 onwards as the second low-pressure area nears the southeast Bay of Bengal, prompting yellow alerts for coastal districts from November 21 to 23.

This new wave of rainfall may assist the state in reaching its seasonal precipitation goal, currently 9% below the average of 29 cm recorded to date. Citizens are urged to stay alert, especially in vulnerable, low-lying areas, and follow directives from local authorities for their safety.

The ongoing rain is likely to disrupt daily activities, transport, and agriculture throughout southern Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, with officials actively monitoring weather changes for timely updates and warnings.
