Qatar Captures More Than 12,800 Invasive Myna Birds in Seven Months

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Qatar’s Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC), through its Wildlife Development Department, is continuing efforts to control the spread of the invasive Myna bird and reduce its impact on the country’s ecosystems and biodiversity.

The ministry said 12,844 invasive Myna birds were captured between January and July, taking the total number captured since the national project began to 61,999.

Control Operations Expanded Across 58 Locations

As part of the ongoing programme, MECC has expanded its bird-control activities across a wider geographical area. The ministry said 849 cages have been placed at 58 locations to strengthen monitoring and control efforts in targeted areas.

The expanded operations are intended to help limit the spread of the invasive species and support the protection of Qatar’s native wildlife and natural habitats.

Why Is the Myna Bird Being Controlled?

According to MECC, the Myna bird is an invasive species that can put pressure on native wildlife. It competes with native species for food sources and nesting sites and may also affect native plants and birds.

The ministry said the species can have an impact on the wider ecological balance, making population control an important part of efforts to protect biodiversity.

Qatar’s Plan to Protect Biodiversity

MECC said it remains committed to tackling the spread of the invasive Myna bird through a clearly defined control plan. The programme focuses on limiting the species’ population, protecting native species and biodiversity, and supporting the natural balance of Qatar’s ecosystems.

The ministry said these efforts form part of Qatar’s broader commitment to wildlife conservation and environmental sustainability.
