Qatar Supports Rural Youth and Agriculture at IFAD Rome Meeting

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The State of Qatar participated in the 49th session of the Governing Council of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), which was held in Rome, Italy. IFAD is a global organization that works to reduce poverty and improve food security in rural areas around the world. Qatar was represented at the meeting by HE Minister of State for International Cooperation, Dr. Maryam bint Ali bin Nasser Al Misnad.

During her speech at the meeting, Dr. Maryam said that this year’s theme, “From Farm to Market: Investing with Young Entrepreneurs,” highlights an important truth. She explained that the future of global food security depends on supporting and empowering young people living in rural areas. According to her, young people should not only be farmers but also innovators, business owners, and leaders who can improve food systems and bring positive change to their communities.

She pointed out that Qatar has been a founding member of IFAD since the late 1970s. This long partnership shows Qatar’s strong belief in the importance of agricultural development and improving life in rural communities. She expressed pride in the progress IFAD has made over the years. The organization has grown stronger and more effective, helping small farmers and rural families improve their living conditions. She said this matches Qatar’s leadership vision, which always puts people at the center of development efforts.

Dr. Maryam emphasized that food security is a national priority for Qatar. It is also a key part of Qatar’s international cooperation strategy. Through partnerships and development programs, Qatar works to build stronger and more resilient food systems in different countries. This includes supporting local food production and helping communities deal with challenges such as climate change and economic difficulties. These efforts are guided by Qatar National Vision 2030, which aims for sustainable development and long-term growth.

She also noted that the IFAD meeting took place at a time when the world is facing many serious challenges. These include limited natural resources, climate change, and disruptions in global supply chains. However, she said that these challenges also create new opportunities. By investing in rural youth, countries can help them become entrepreneurs and innovators in agriculture and food production. This can lead to stronger economies and better food systems worldwide.

Based on this belief, Qatar’s partnership with IFAD focuses on three main areas. The first is strengthening resilient food systems so that countries can better handle future crises. The second is helping young entrepreneurs move from farming to selling their products in markets, giving them better income opportunities. The third is promoting innovation and digital transformation in agriculture, such as using modern technology to increase productivity and efficiency.

Dr. Maryam added that Qatar sees IFAD as an important partner in turning international promises into real results on the ground. Both sides share the same mission: to support rural families, empower young people, and build food systems that are strong, fair, and sustainable.

In closing, she stressed that investing in productive youth is an investment in the future of humanity. When young people are given the right tools, education, and opportunities, they can become leaders in global food systems. She confirmed that Qatar will continue working closely with IFAD and other international partners to ensure that rural youth have the chance to succeed and contribute to global food security.
