Qatar’s national football team claimed a thrilling 2-1 victory over the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday, securing their spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The win came thanks to crucial second-half headers from Boualem Khouki and Pedro Miguel, which ensured Qatar’s progression to the tournament.
This victory marks Qatar’s second consecutive World Cup qualification following their debut as hosts in 2022. The team now tops Group A with four points, ahead of the UAE on three and Oman on one, in the fourth round of the Asian qualifying competition.
Key Goals and Moments in the Match
The first goal came four minutes into the second half, when Khouki met Akram Afif’s free kick to put Qatar ahead. The team’s Asian Player of the Year, Afif, once again unlocked the UAE defence in the 74th minute, delivering a free kick that Miguel headed into the net, doubling Qatar’s lead.
The UAE pulled one back late in the match when Sultan Adil scored nine minutes after Qatar’s Tarek Salman was sent off in the 89th minute. The game featured more than 15 minutes of stoppage time, adding to the drama and tension until Qatar held on for the win.
Qatar’s Strong Performance and Team Effort
Qatar started the match with high intensity, creating several scoring opportunities. Early attempts included a shot by Sultan Al-Brake that was saved by UAE goalkeeper Khalid Eisa, and a near miss by Nicolas Giminez for the UAE.
Lucas Pimenta of the UAE also came close on the quarter-hour mark but failed to connect properly with Ali Saleh’s cross. On the home side, Edmilson Junior and Mohammad Manai were unlucky with headers, narrowly missing goals as Qatar applied constant pressure throughout the first half.
Dramatic Finish and Defensive Resilience
After taking the lead, Qatar faced a tense final phase when Tarek Salman received a red card for a reckless tackle. Despite being a player down, Julen Lopetegui’s team held firm, with strong defensive efforts to maintain their advantage.
The UAE’s late goal by Sultan Adil created a nail-biting ending, but Qatar’s players remained focused and controlled the game until the final whistle, securing the victory and the qualification.
With this win, Qatar will appear at the World Cup for the second time, aiming to build on their experience from 2022. The team’s performance in this qualifier highlights their skill, teamwork, and determination to compete on the world stage.
The UAE, meanwhile, will continue their journey in the qualifiers with a two-legged clash against Iraq, with the winner advancing to the intercontinental playoff in March.
A Proud Moment for Qatar
Qatar’s 2-1 victory over the UAE is a historic and proud moment for the nation. The team’s disciplined performance, strategic play, and late-game resilience ensured their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Fans and the country can now look forward to another exciting campaign as Qatar prepares to compete among the world’s top football teams.
