Qatar University Signs Key Partnership to Advance Space Research

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Qatar University (QU) has signed an important cooperation agreement with Qatar’s satellite company, Es’hailSat, to strengthen the country’s work in space, research, and innovation. This new partnership supports QU’s goal of becoming a leading center in the fields of space technology, scientific studies, and modern innovation.

The agreement focuses on developing nanosatellite technology at the university. Nanosatellites are small satellites used for research and scientific missions. Through this partnership, QU will combine its academic and research strength with Es’hailSat’s strong experience in managing and operating satellites. This joint effort is expected to help Qatar build its national skills in the space field and improve its presence in the global space sector.

Prof. Aiman Erbad, Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies at QU, said the partnership is a major step forward for the university. He explained that working with Es’hailSat will help QU make strong progress in nanosatellite development. He added that the collaboration will open new opportunities for students and researchers to work on important scientific and technological projects. According to him, the partnership brings together industrial expertise and academic excellence, creating a strong foundation for future growth.

Prof. Erbad also highlighted that QU is proud to contribute to building national capabilities. He said the projects developed under this agreement will help Qatar become more active in the global space sector. By encouraging research, technology, and innovation, the university hopes to inspire future generations to explore and participate in advanced scientific fields.

Mr. Hamad Omar Al-Mannai, Vice President of Commercial at Es’hailSat, also expressed his appreciation for the partnership. He said that collaborating with QU is a valuable opportunity that will support the country’s long-term goals in space research and innovation. He explained that the company is committed to helping develop national talent by sharing technical knowledge and supporting hands-on scientific projects.

He added that the joint work will help Qatar enhance its position in the space industry. By bringing academic skills and industrial experience together, the two institutions aim to launch high-quality projects that will lead to technological advancement and scientific success.

The agreement includes plans to design, build, and operate nanosatellite missions. These missions will focus on scientific research, engineering development, and STEM education. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—fields that Qatar aims to strengthen among its students and future professionals.

Both QU and Es’hailSat will also exchange technical skills, research knowledge, and operational experience to ensure the success of all future projects. This cooperation will help students and researchers learn directly from industry experts, giving them practical experience in real satellite missions.

QU’s nanosatellite program began in 2018. Since then, it has included student projects, faculty research, and initiatives supported by the Qatar Research, Development & Innovation (QRDI) Program. One major achievement of this program is the establishment of Qatar’s only academic satellite ground station, which is located at Qatar University. This station allows students and researchers to communicate with satellites, analyze data, and carry out research activities.

The new agreement with Es’hailSat is expected to expand these efforts even further. As Qatar continues to invest in science and technology, the collaboration marks an important milestone in building the country’s future in the space sector. With stronger research programs, advanced satellite projects, and shared expertise, Qatar aims to become a regional leader in space science and innovation.
