Rumen Radev, the former president of Bulgaria, has achieved a remarkable victory in the country’s recent parliamentary election, signaling a pivotal political change. With initial results indicating that his party, Progressive Bulgaria, has garnered a substantial majority, he is poised to establish the next government.
Conducted on April 19, 2026, this election follows a series of political upheavals in Bulgaria, where citizens have been called to vote multiple times in recent years. This marks the eighth election within a five-year span, underscoring the difficulties in cultivating stable governance.
With more than 90 percent of votes tallied, Radev’s party has achieved approximately 44.7 percent of the total, placing them significantly ahead of competing factions. The pro-European coalition known as We Continue the Change–Democratic Bulgaria has received over 13 percent of the vote, while the previously dominant GERB party, under the leadership of former Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, is lagging behind closely.
In his statement following the election results, Radev characterized the outcome as a “victory of hope,” reflecting the electorate's aspiration for change and reliability. While his party has the strength to govern independently, he remains open to forming a coalition to ensure enduring political stability.
Borissov acknowledged Radev’s triumph but cautioned that leading the country may prove to be a greater challenge than securing the vote. His comments highlight the widespread concerns regarding Bulgaria’s recent history of transient governments and unstable coalitions.
Radev, noted for his opposition to corruption and advocacy for governance reform, resigned from the presidency earlier this year to run in this election. He has vowed to dismantle what he perceives as an “oligarchic governance model” and to foster stability within the political landscape.
Voter turnout was notably strong, surpassing 50 percent, as efforts were made to mitigate worries over vote buying and electoral integrity. In the lead-up to the election, law enforcement executed raids and confiscated significant amounts of money linked to allegations of electoral fraud.
As a member of the European Union since 2007, Bulgaria has endured considerable political instability in recent years. Radev’s election win is perceived as a potential turning point, with hopes that his governance can provide a steadier and more consistent trajectory for the country's future.
