Rahul Gandhi, the Opposition Leader in the Lok Sabha, is preparing for a visit to Berlin, Germany, scheduled from December 15 to 20, 2025. He will be attending an event organized by the Indian Overseas Congress (IOC) during Parliament's Winter Session, which runs until December 19. The overlap of these dates has sparked fierce criticism from BJP leaders, who have targeted Gandhi for choosing to travel abroad while Parliament is active.
Critics from the BJP have labeled Gandhi as the “Leader of Paryatan” (tourism), alleging he favors international trips over his obligations in the House. BJP spokespersons and government ministers have accused him of being a “part-time politician” with an alleged disregard for his parliamentary role. They maintain that his trips, including this one to Germany, suggest a lack of seriousness about his responsibilities as the Opposition Leader, claiming he promotes anti-India sentiments rather than fostering constructive dialogues.
In a rebuttal to these claims, key Congress figures, including Priyanka Gandhi, have come to Rahul Gandhi's defense, highlighting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi also makes frequent international trips as part of his official duties. She questioned why such criticisms are not levied at the Prime Minister. The Congress perspective argues that Gandhi's journey is focused on global outreach and engagement with the Indian diaspora, distancing it from any tourism-related motivations.
Gaurav Gogoi, Deputy Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, remarked that the BJP's criticisms are merely a distraction from serious issues raised by Gandhi in Parliament regarding suspected electoral anomalies. Congress insists that instead of targeting opposition leaders engaged with the diaspora, the government should prioritize addressing pressing domestic matters and uphold accountability in Parliament.
The Indian Overseas Congress portrays Rahul Gandhi's visit to Berlin as a meaningful effort to solidify the party's international presence. The event aims to gather Presidents and senior delegates of the IOC from across Europe, offering a space to tackle pressing issues affecting Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), enhance the Congress Party's integrity, and promote its ideology globally. The IOC has emphasized the importance of fostering productive dialogue and collaboration with the Indian diaspora, enhancing political engagement and broadening the party’s network.
Ultimately, Rahul Gandhi's venture underscores the ongoing conflict between the BJP and Congress concerning parliamentary expectations, international diplomacy, and political outreach, encapsulating the larger discourse on the duties and focuses of India’s elected officials.
