Nepal has celebrated a remarkable achievement with 274 climbers reaching the summit of Mount Everest in a single day from the Nepali side, establishing a new record for the highest number of successful ascents in 24 hours.
Officials from the Nepal hiking and tourism department have authenticated this groundbreaking number, which eclipses the prior record of 223 climbers achieved in 2019. This surge in climbers coincided with an ideal weather window, allowing for a safer ascent.
Mount Everest, towering at 8,849 meters, sits at the border of Nepal and China’s Tibet region. This year, ascent permissions were only permitted from the Nepali side due to the absence of climbing permits issued by Chinese authorities for Tibet expeditions.
Visuals from the climb showcased lengthy lines of climbers heading towards the summit ridge. Experts have consistently cautioned that overcrowding within Everest’s “death zone,” above 8,000 meters, poses severe risks due to critically low oxygen levels and rapidly shifting weather conditions.
Adventurers have pointed out that such congestion near the peak can instigate exhaustion, frostbite, oxygen deficiencies, and extended delays, all of which amplify the risk of tragic outcomes. Many mountaineers and guides have voiced worries about the escalating commercialization and crowding during peak season.
In light of safety worries, authorities in Nepal have imposed stricter regulations and have raised permit fees in recent years, aiming to enhance crowd control and expedition safety. Climber movements are also being scrutinized more closely to mitigate risks at elevated altitudes.
Despite these concerns, Mount Everest continues to allure numerous international climbers who aspire to conquer the famed Himalayan peak each year. Authorities anticipate even higher summit counts as some expedition groups have yet to report their successful ascents back to base camp.
This latest milestone underscores both the worldwide intrigue surrounding Mount Everest and the mounting challenges Nepal faces in managing tourism revenue, adventurer demand, and climber safety on the iconic mountain.
