Health Risks of Early Morning Runs Amid Pollution: Insights from Mumbai Doctor

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Staying fit through running is common, but health professionals stress that in heavily polluted cities, exercising outdoors can pose significant risks. Dr. Ramkishan Nag, a surgical oncology consultant at HCG Cancer Centre in Borivali, warns that early morning workouts during winter can expose lungs to harmful pollutants.

Dr. Nag highlights that a mix of smog, vehicular emissions, and cold, stagnant air traps toxins close to the ground, posing serious risks for runners. “Air Quality Index (AQI) levels ranging from 200 to 400 are worryingly frequent across many Indian cities. Even a half-hour run outside can equal the toxic exposure of smoking multiple cigarettes,” he stated.

Engaging in aerobic exercises like jogging heightens the body’s demand for oxygen. This deeper breathing can inadvertently intake more particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, and other harmful substances into the lungs. Dr. Nag elaborated that this could lead to inflammation, diminished lung capacity, and exacerbate existing conditions like asthma or chronic bronchitis. Prolonged exposure might heighten the risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and heart problems.

To ensure safety, runners should adapt their exercise based on the air quality index. If the AQI goes above 200, it's advisable to forgo vigorous outdoor workouts. Safer options include treadmills, gyms, or home exercise routines. If running outdoors is unavoidable, wearing a certified N95 mask, steering clear of congested roads, and choosing greener areas with improved airflow can help mitigate exposure.

Technology also plays a role in exercising safely. Real-time AQI applications permit runners to choose their workout timings wisely. Dr. Nag notes that pollution levels are often lower later in the mornings and evenings compared to the early hours.

He further emphasized the necessity of long-term strategies, such as enhancing green areas, promoting cleaner public transport, and implementing stricter emission regulations. “Running remains an effective fitness strategy, but it should enhance lung health rather than jeopardize it. With mindful planning, fitness lovers can safeguard their health amidst urban pollution,” Dr. Nag concluded.
