RTA Enhances Mobility in Al Quoz Creative Zone

Post by : Bianca Haleem

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai has finalized an extensive set of infrastructure enhancements in the Al Quoz Creative Zone, a pivotal step towards establishing it as one of the largest integrated creative districts worldwide.

These initiatives are part of a broader master plan aimed at boosting connectivity, improving transport integration, and supporting Dubai's vision for a sustainable and pedestrian-friendly urban space. Al Quoz Creative Zone is envisioned as a global center for creatives, entrepreneurs, and investors in the creative economy, offering a nurturing ecosystem for all aspects of the creative process—from design to exhibition.

The area will feature affordable living spaces, vibrant public areas, and dedicated venues for cultural and artistic events, asserting its status as a dynamic year-round destination for cultural, educational, and recreational pursuits.

New Bridge, Mobility Hubs, and 4km of Walking and Cycling Routes

One of the significant projects completed by RTA is a new pedestrian and cycling bridge on Al Manara Street. Designed to enhance safety and facilitate smooth transitions for pedestrians and cyclists, the bridge harmonizes with the area's architectural essence.

This structure measures 45 metres in length and 5.5 metres in width, standing 6 metres high. It features accessibility-friendly ramps extending 210 metres each.

Additionally, RTA has introduced three mobility hubs and developed a pedestrian, cycling, and individual mobility route network extending four kilometers. This network connects the Al Quoz Creative Zone to Onpassive Metro Station and Al Quoz Bus Station, simplifying movement for all users.

Implementing the Super Blocks Project

Preparations for the Super Blocks project in Al Quoz Creative Zone are now complete, forming part of Dubai's broader vision to expand pedestrian-friendly pathways throughout the emirate.

This innovative project will create flexible urban spaces for art events and cultural festivals by temporarily closing select streets to vehicle access. The Al Quoz Arts Festival, happening on January 24 and 25, will be one of the first to utilize this new pedestrian area, organized by Alserkal Avenue in collaboration with Dubai Culture.

The Super Blocks initiative aligns with the goals of the Year of the Family, the Dubai Social Agenda 33, and the Dubai Urban Plan 2040 by fostering community connections, improving quality of life, and creating vibrant, people-centric public spaces. It also supports the 20-Minute City initiative, aiming to promote walking, cycling, and sustainable transport options while moving toward a greener urban atmosphere.

RTA’s Commitment to Integrated Transport

His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of RTA, highlighted that the completion of these infrastructure projects demonstrates RTA's dedication to establishing a cohesive transport system that diminishes reliance on cars while enhancing urban mobility.

He emphasized that linking Al Quoz Creative Zone with transit stations and extensive pedestrian and cycling routes is integral to RTA’s mission of providing user-centric mobility solutions across Dubai.

Al Tayer stated that the new bridge on Al Manara Street significantly improves safety and traffic efficiency, as the mobility hubs and pathways contribute to a more connected urban environment that promotes walking and community interaction.

Dubai Culture's Vision for Economic Growth

Her Excellency Hala Badri, Director General of Dubai Culture, expressed that Al Quoz Creative Zone exemplifies Dubai's ambition to leverage culture as a catalyst for economic development and to strengthen the emirate's position as an international creative hub.

She noted that the zone creates an all-encompassing environment for creatives, entrepreneurs, and investors, and the enhancement of transport systems will further improve its accessibility and appeal.

Dubai Culture plans to activate the zone with cultural programs and initiatives that support innovation and opportunities in the creative sectors.

A District on the Verge of Expansion

According to the master plan, Al Quoz Creative Zone is set to experience robust growth. The number of creatives in the zone is projected to leap from 900 to 20,000, accommodating 8,000 residents and attracting around 33,000 visitors daily.

Future plans include a tenfold increase in workspace and studio availability, a threefold expansion of leisure and supportive facilities, as well as a 30% increase in leasable areas. Once fully developed, Al Quoz Creative Zone is poised to become a leading global creative district.

Creating Affordable Housing with Urban Identity

A new planning code is being introduced to facilitate integrated live-work spaces, including 2,900 affordable housing options for creatives. The design prioritizes public areas ideal for exhibitions, performances, and cultural activities.

The transformation will see alleys converted into shaded walkways, with public plazas and shared areas designed for community engagement and artistic displays. The connectivity infrastructure in Al Quoz Creative Zone positions the district to emerge as one of Dubai's most accessible and culturally rich destinations, making it a key player in the global creative economy.
