Increasing Saltwater Intrusion Threats in Mekong Delta

Post by : Shakul

The Mekong Delta faces a growing threat from saltwater intrusion as water flow from the Mekong River diminishes. Projections suggest that conditions will deteriorate through April and May 2026, causing alarm for local agriculture and freshwater supplies.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting reports that saltwater has penetrated considerable distances inland, with salinity levels reaching up to 55 kilometers in several areas and extending to 70 kilometers along certain river pathways. While the severity is expected to be lower than in past extreme cases, authorities urge communities to stay vigilant.

In response, the government is initiating numerous preventive strategies, such as enhancing irrigation and upgrading water management systems to mitigate salinity and protect freshwater sources. Current reservoir levels are stable, aiding agricultural endeavors, yet proactive planning is essential.

Experts advocate for a multifaceted strategy, including adapting crop types, implementing water conservation measures, and ongoing weather monitoring. Additionally, rising tidal conditions and possible flooding in coastal regions could further complicate matters, necessitating collaborative efforts to mitigate risks and safeguard livelihoods.
