A major accident occurred in Santiago, Chile, when a truck carrying liquid gas overturned and exploded, killing at least four people and injuring 17 others. The incident took place in the northern commune of Renca, near a busy highway and industrial zone.
According to authorities, the truck driver lost control of the vehicle before it crashed. The driver was among those confirming dead in the explosion. The blast was extremely powerful and was felt within a 150 to 200 metre radius.
Firefighters said that at least 50 vehicles parked nearby were damaged due to the explosion. Thick flames and smoke were seen rising from the site, and videos of the blast quickly spread across social media.
Five of the injured are reported to be in serious condition, said Claudio Orrego, Governor of the Santiago Metropolitan Region. Emergency services rushed to the spot and shifted the injured to nearby hospitals.
Officials confirmed that the gas truck was operated by Gasco, a local gas supply company. Authorities secured the area to prevent further danger and evacuated nearby locations as a precaution.
Chile’s prosecutor’s office has launched a formal investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident and whether safety norms were followed.
