Saudi Arabia’s Cabinet has approved an agreement to build a high-speed electric rail line linking the Kingdom with Qatar. The approval was given during a Cabinet meeting chaired by King Salman bin Abdulaziz in Riyadh. The agreement was signed between the Saudi and Qatari governments to implement a passenger rail project connecting the two countries.
The project was first agreed upon in late December during the eighth meeting of the Saudi-Qatari Coordination Council in Riyadh, co-chaired by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
The rail line will span 785 kilometers (487 miles), connecting Riyadh and Doha, and will include major stations in Al-Hofuf and Dammam. The route will also link Saudi Arabia’s King Salman International Airport and Qatar’s Hamad International Airport.
Trains on the line will run at speeds of over 300 kilometers (186 miles) per hour, reducing travel time between the two capitals to about two hours. The project is expected to serve more than 10 million passengers each year and create over 30,000 direct and indirect jobs.
The high-speed rail project is scheduled for completion within six years, marking a major step in improving transport connectivity and boosting economic cooperation between Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
