Coach to Decide if Messi Plays Against Puerto Rico

Coach to Decide if Messi Plays Against Puerto Rico

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Argentina national football team coach Lionel Scaloni has said he will speak with Lionel Messi before the final training session to decide whether the star captain will play in the upcoming friendly match against Puerto Rico. The match is scheduled for Tuesday night at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale. The coach stated that Messi’s condition and readiness would determine his participation in the game.

Messi Missed the First Friendly

Messi did not take part in Argentina’s first friendly of the October FIFA window against Venezuela on October 10. Instead, he stayed in the United States to play for Inter Miami in their Major League Soccer (MLS) match against Atlanta United on October 11. His absence raised questions among fans, but the decision was approved by the Argentina Football Association because of Messi’s busy club schedule.

Strong Performance for Inter Miami

The decision turned out well for Messi’s club. The Argentina captain delivered an amazing performance for Inter Miami, scoring two goals and one assist in a 4–0 win over Atlanta United. The performance proved that Messi remains in top form. After that game, Messi returned to join Argentina’s training camp ahead of the Puerto Rico match. His presence brought excitement to both teammates and supporters.

Scaloni to Speak with Messi Before Decision

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Scaloni explained his plan clearly. “I saw Messi play on Saturday. From what I know, he finished well. I haven’t spoken to him yet,” he said. “Now we have the last training session for tomorrow’s match, and as we always do before preparing for the final training, I’ll talk to him and if he’s in condition, he’ll play tomorrow.”

Messi’s Return Brings Excitement

After Messi rejoined the squad, the Argentina Football Association issued a statement expressing the team’s excitement. “Leo’s return generates great anticipation and promises a spectacular atmosphere for this new international challenge,” the statement read. The team also noted that the match against Puerto Rico will help prepare for upcoming competitions and allow the coaching staff to test strategies and player combinations.

A Rare Arrangement Between Club and Country

It is unusual for a player to be allowed to skip a national friendly to play in a club match, but this was a special case. Argentina’s football authorities gave Messi permission to represent Inter Miami in their second-to-last regular-season match. Miami is currently fighting for a better position in the Eastern Conference table to secure home advantage in the postseason playoffs. This agreement between Argentina and Inter Miami showed mutual respect and flexibility.

Change in Venue and Schedule

The friendly against Puerto Rico was originally planned for October 13 at Soldier Field in Chicago. However, due to changes made by the event’s promoter, the game was rescheduled to October 14 and moved to Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale — the home ground of Inter Miami. This venue change will likely draw a large crowd of Messi supporters, as the stadium is familiar territory for the Argentine legend.

A Key Match in Argentina’s Preparation

The match against Puerto Rico is part of Argentina’s preparation for future international competitions, including the next World Cup qualifiers. Scaloni is expected to use this game to test tactics, give chances to younger players, and strengthen team coordination. Having Messi on the field, even for limited minutes, would help build rhythm and chemistry among players.

Fans around the world are waiting eagerly to see whether Lionel Messi will take part in the match. His recent club form has given hope that he is fully fit, but the final decision rests with Scaloni after the last training session. Whether or not Messi plays, his presence alone adds excitement and prestige to the friendly. Argentina’s supporters in Florida are expected to fill the stadium to cheer for their World Cup-winning heroes.
