The city of Seattle has agreed to pay $29 million to the family of Jaahnavi Kandula, a 23-year-old student from India who was fatally struck by a speeding police vehicle while crossing a street in 2023. The settlement was filed last week in King County Superior Court, according to local media reports.
The incident occurred when a Seattle police officer, responding to a drug overdose call, was driving at speeds of up to 74 mph in a 25-mph zone. Although emergency lights were on, the officer struck Kandula as she crossed the road. Kandula was pursuing a master’s degree in information systems at Northeastern University’s Seattle campus at the time of her death.
Seattle City Attorney Erika Evans said the city hopes the settlement provides some sense of closure to the family, acknowledging that Kandula’s life mattered deeply to her loved ones and the community. Nearly $20 million of the settlement amount is expected to be covered by the city’s insurance.
The case sparked widespread outrage and protests after body-camera footage showed another officer making insensitive remarks about Kandula’s death. That officer was later dismissed from service and is challenging his termination in court. The officer who was driving the vehicle was fired, charged with negligent driving, and fined, though prosecutors declined to pursue more serious charges, citing insufficient evidence of intent.
