South Korea is amplifying its AI efforts through a fresh alliance with the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The AI committee of the presidential office unveiled on Monday plans to create a joint task force dedicated to advancing AI collaboration, following agreements from last week’s summit between President Lee Jae Myung and UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
This task force will be jointly led by the secretary for AI policy and future planning and the vice chairman of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI). The aim is to formulate a cooperative public-private framework and pinpoint significant investment projects set to unfold within the year.
To support this initiative, five specialized working groups will be formed, each overseen by relevant ministries such as the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of Climate, Environment and Energy. During the summit between Seoul and Abu Dhabi, both leaders highlighted the importance of joint development and marketing within AI, complemented by integrated projects across AI, energy, and defense sectors.
Seven memorandums of understanding were established to bolster this partnership, with South Korea participating in the UAE’s Stargate project focused on AI and energy infrastructures. The Stargate initiative aims to establish a cluster of AI data centers in Abu Dhabi, beginning with a 200-megawatt facility slated for next year, as part of a broader 5-gigawatt AI campus.
In response to these international strategies, South Korean markets experienced a cautious trading session. The KOSPI index fell by 0.19 percent to 3,846.06 after a significant drop on Friday, reflecting ongoing apprehensions regarding AI stocks. Initial foreign investor activity raised trading optimism, but they later transformed into net sellers, impacting the index negatively.
Through this strategic partnership, South Korea and the UAE seek to emerge as frontrunners in AI innovation, energy progress, and international technological cooperation.
