Shami Excluded from India Squad Despite Impressive Ranji Performance

Post by : Meena Hassan

Mohammed Shami, a seasoned fast bowler from India, has achieved a remarkable 15 wickets in just three matches during the Ranji Trophy 2025/26 season. Yet, he was not included in the India squad by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the upcoming series against South Africa.

Coach Critiques Selection Panel

Frustration is palpable from Shami's personal coach, Mohammed Badruddin, who accuses the BCCI of having made a decision to overlook Shami prior to the announcement. Badruddin rebuffed suggestions regarding Shami’s fitness, asserting that his current performance clearly indicates he is in prime condition.

“It’s evident he’s being ignored. He’s not unfit — when a player is capturing 15 wickets in two games, unfitness is not the issue. The selectors are choosing to disregard him,” Badruddin commented.

Criticism of Selection Criteria

Badruddin voiced concerns regarding the selection process, proposing that test squad decisions are being swayed by T20 performance indicators rather than genuine domestic achievements in the Ranji Trophy. He labeled the justification for Shami’s exclusion as “plain wrong” and “pre-determined.”

Shami's Past Contributions Emphasize His Worth

Shami last represented India on March 9, 2025, during the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand, where he ended up as one of the joint top wicket-takers with nine dismissals across five matches. In light of these performances, he found himself omitted from both the India A and senior rosters for the South Africa fixture.

Optimism for Shami's Future

Even with this setback, Badruddin remains optimistic about Shami’s return to the Indian side. He reiterated that Shami's skill set and history, including vital contributions in World Cups, justify his potential reinstatement.

“He can absolutely come back. I’m very confident in his return, and when he does, it will be noteworthy enough to silence any criticism,” Badruddin stated.

Additionally, Shami may enter the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 mini-auction after a modest performance in IPL 2025 with Sunrisers Hyderabad, providing him with yet another chance to display his skills.
