His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, officially opened the newly developed Independence Square on Tuesday morning. The inauguration followed the completion of major construction and redevelopment works, which included building the Independence Monument and improving the surrounding areas. The project was launched in celebration of the UAE’s 54th Eid Al Etihad and in remembrance of the nation’s independence on 2nd December 1971.
At the centre of the square, the Ruler of Sharjah unveiled the commemorative plaque of the 34-metre-high monument. The structure is topped with a seven-pointed star that represents the seven emirates of the UAE. The monument stands as a new urban symbol in Sharjah, honouring the historical and national significance of this important location. Each of the four sides of the monument displays valuable historical information linked to the UAE’s journey to independence.
One plaque explains that on the morning of 2nd December 1971, the Rulers of the Emirates met and agreed to form a unified country named the United Arab Emirates, marking the end of British control. Another plaque notes that British presence in the Emirates lasted 151 years, beginning with the signing of the British treaty on 8th January 1820.
A third plaque records the establishment of the Sharjah Civil Air Station on 22nd July 1932 and mentions that the British military base was removed on 2nd December 1971 while the civil station continued functioning. The fourth plaque highlights that the British military had been based at the civil air station in a way that conflicted with the agreement between Sharjah and Britain.
Following the unveiling, His Highness toured Independence Square and learned about the two decorative fountains located on either side of the monument. These fountains add movement and beauty to the entire site. He also viewed the extensive landscaping, green areas, pedestrian walkways and upgraded lighting system which together improve the square’s appearance and elevate its design quality.
During the visit, the Ruler of Sharjah received a detailed explanation about the refurbishment of buildings surrounding the square. As part of the redevelopment, facades of 24 buildings were improved with architectural enhancements and fresh finishes that align with Sharjah’s distinctive identity. The authorities also replaced and unified 95 commercial signboards to create a harmonious urban view. New lighting systems were installed to highlight the buildings’ features at night and add to the visual charm of the area.
The renovation of Independence Square reflects His Highness’s vision of improving urban beauty, supporting comfortable public spaces, and creating an environment that serves both residents and visitors. The project contributes to improving quality of life, strengthening national identity, and promoting values of unity and development. Infrastructure improvements included upgrading roads, walkways and parking areas to ensure smooth traffic flow and better safety. All lighting poles around the square were replaced as part of this large redevelopment effort.
The project forms part of Sharjah’s ongoing urban development plan, which aims to enhance key locations across the emirate and offer cultural and service facilities that preserve the city’s heritage and visual identity.
In addition to opening the square, the Ruler of Sharjah also inaugurated the restored Imam Al-Nawawi Mosque, which stands next to the square. Originally built in 1995, the mosque has now been renovated in the Fatimid architectural style. His Highness unveiled the commemorative plaque marking the reopening and prayed in the mosque. He reviewed the main renovation works, which included raising the height of the two minarets, increasing the height of the surrounding walls, adding an exterior arcade, and updating the facilities to better support worshippers.
These works reaffirm Sharjah’s dedication to preserving and expanding its mosques, ensuring they continue to serve the community both spiritually and socially. The Ruler was accompanied by several senior officials during the inauguration, reflecting the importance of these development projects to the emirate’s future.
