Warning Signs of Heart Failure: Coughing While Lying Down

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Heart failure is frequently misinterpreted. People often think of dramatic events like chest pain or collapse, but the truth is more nuanced. This condition generally develops quietly, revealing signs that can easily go unnoticed. Early identification of these signs is vital as swift intervention can prevent escalation.

Dr. Dmitry Yaranov, a notable cardiologist and heart transplant surgeon with expertise in advanced heart failure and mechanical circulatory support, recently detailed five surprising symptoms of heart failure. In an Instagram update on November 20, he pointed out that a lot of individuals assume they would recognize heart failure immediately, but initial symptoms are usually subtle and might be blamed on stress or fatigue.

A common yet overlooked indicator is a constant cough that intensifies when lying down. Dr. Yaranov notes that fluid accumulation in the lungs can lead to this symptom, particularly in a horizontal position. Other unnoticed signs may emerge before more apparent issues like swelling or breathlessness arise.

Marked fluctuations in weight also signal potential heart strain. Quick weight gains over several days may suggest fluid retention due to ineffective heart pumping. Unexplained nausea or appetite loss could further indicate heart-related problems, as diminished blood flow may impact digestion.

Cognitive shifts, including newfound challenges with focus or memory, are often disregarded yet can reveal that the heart is not adequately delivering oxygen to the brain. Likewise, restless sleep or poor sleeping patterns may point to heart complications, as the body can struggle to maintain equilibrium while resting.

Dr. Yaranov stresses the importance of early recognition of these vague signs. Minor health changes shouldn't be ignored as mere aging or stress. Regular consultations with a cardiologist are key to identifying heart issues before they worsen.

Heart failure is manageable, especially if detected early. Lifestyle modifications, medication, and vigilance can enhance outcomes and life quality. By being mindful of initial warning signs like persistent coughs, sudden weight changes, nausea, trouble concentrating, and unsettled sleeping, individuals can actively safeguard their heart health.

While cinematic portrayals of heart failure command attention, the true risk lies in unnoticed subtle shifts in the body. Dr. Yaranov's insights serve as a reminder: tuning in to your body and pursuing timely medical advice can significantly affect the outcome.
