Seoul: South Korea’s automobile exports recorded strong growth in January, rising 21.7 percent year-on-year, according to data released by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources on Thursday.
The total value of vehicle exports reached $6.07 billion, marking the second-highest January export figure ever for the country. The growth was mainly supported by strong global demand for eco-friendly vehicles and a higher number of working days compared to the same period last year.
Exports of electric vehicles (EVs) increased by 21.2 percent, reaching $780 million. Meanwhile, shipments of hybrid vehicles showed significant growth, surging 85.5 percent year-on-year to $1.71 billion.
The sharp rise in eco-friendly vehicle exports highlights the growing international demand for low-emission mobility solutions and reflects South Korea’s strengthening position in the global green automotive market, according to a report by Yonhap News Agency.
Industry experts believe that continued demand for electric and hybrid models is expected to support export performance in the coming months.
