Recently, the air quality in Delhi, Gurugram, and surrounding regions has sharply declined, resulting in a dense smog covering the area. Residents are experiencing issues like coughing, chest tightness, burning eyes, and shortness of breath. Experts highlight the importance of safeguarding lung health and adapting breathing practices during these challenging conditions.
Dr. Piyush Goel, a leading pulmonologist at Narayana Hospital in Gurugram, has introduced an effective breathing exercise known as the 20-20-20 technique. This method is designed for those living in high-pollution environments and can be performed at home without special equipment.
Dr. Goel notes that in polluted air, individuals tend to breathe more rapidly and shallowly, which limits the oxygen intake in the body. The 20-20-20 technique encourages a shift from this unhealthy habit by promoting deeper, slower breathing.
To perform the exercise, find a clean indoor area. For added benefits, position yourself near an air purifier. You may either sit or stand comfortably.
Follow these steps:
Inhale deeply through your nose for 20 seconds, ensuring to fully expand your lungs.
Hold the breath for 20 seconds. If this proves challenging, start with a 10-second hold and gradually extend it.
Exhale slowly through your mouth over a period of 20 seconds, allowing all air to escape your lungs.
Dr. Goel emphasizes that deep and slow breathing helps fully expand the lungs, enhancing the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide within the lung’s small air sacs. Briefly holding the breath grants the lungs a moment to utilize the air more effectively, and exhaling gradually expels stale air and trapped pollutants.
This exercise not only fortifies the lungs but also promotes relaxation and reduces stress, which can heighten during polluted periods.
While incorporating this exercise is beneficial, it’s also crucial to limit outdoor exposure during high pollution times, wear masks as needed, keep hydrated, and ensure indoor air quality remains high.
The 20-20-20 breathing technique is straightforward, safe, and appropriate for all age groups. Regular practice can lead to improved lung health and better resilience against polluted air.
