In a significant move towards enhancing global security frameworks, Turkmenistan and the United Nations have reaffirmed their commitment to collaboration following pivotal discussions held in New York. During an official visit to the U.S., Turkmen Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov engaged with Acting UN Under-Secretary-General Alexander Zuev, focusing on a wide array of diplomatic and security endeavors.
The conversation underscored the enduring strategic alliance between Turkmenistan and the UN, with both parties expressing contentment with their expanding cooperation across numerous fields. They highlighted the necessity for close cooperation in tackling urgent global issues surrounding peace, security, and sustainable growth.
Central to the discussions was the recent UN General Assembly resolution titled “The Role and Importance of a Policy of Neutrality in Maintaining and Strengthening International Peace, Security and Sustainable Development,” which was ratified on May 20, 2026. This resolution symbolizes a significant acknowledgment of Turkmenistan's enduring neutral stance and its vital role in fostering international peace initiatives.
Turkmenistan proposed several ambitious plans aimed at promoting peace and preventive diplomacy, including the establishment of an Academic Center for the Study of Peace, Neutrality, and Preventive Diplomacy at its Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This center is slated to facilitate research, education, and international dialogue concerning conflict resolution and constructive cooperation.
Additionally, the Turkmen delegation introduced the idea of creating a Chamber of Mediation for Peace, which would act as a practical avenue for settling disputes through dialogue. The discussions also covered joint efforts to formulate international guidelines regarding neutrality principles and to advance President Serdar Berdimuhamedov’s vision of a Global Security Strategy anchored in international law.
Key regional and global security matters were thoroughly addressed, reinforcing Turkmenistan's commitment to the United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia. Officials reiterated the importance of collective action to address evolving security challenges, emphasizing that preventive diplomacy is vital for maintaining regional stability.
A highlight of the talks was the suggestion to set up a Programme Office of the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism in Ashgabat. Turkmen representatives shared that this office would serve as a crucial platform for regional cooperation on counter-terrorism, enhancing security capacity, and facilitating information exchange. The meeting drew to a close with both parties expressing their eagerness to advance mutual cooperation through collaborative programs, training initiatives, and ongoing diplomatic efforts.
