The leader of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF), General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, announced a three-month humanitarian ceasefire on Monday, heeding calls from global leaders including US President Donald Trump to halt the warfare. This announcement aligns with ongoing efforts by the US, UAE, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia—collectively known as the Quad—to facilitate a temporary truce and initiate peace negotiations.
In a public address, General Dagalo declared that the ceasefire would take effect immediately, urging the Quad nations to persuade Sudan's army to engage in the peace dialogue. This declaration was unexpected, as the RSF had recently conducted drone strikes against army positions.
The unrest in Sudan erupted in April 2023, primarily over disputes regarding the integration of the RSF into the Sudanese army. The conflict has led to extensive devastation, resulting in the deaths of tens of thousands and triggering a severe famine. The RSF seized control of the Darfur region after capturing El Fasher in late October and faces accusations of committing brutal attacks and engaging in ethnic violence. Both General Dagalo and Sudan's army chief, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, are under US sanctions.
General al-Burhan dismissed the Quad's peace initiative, claiming it favors the RSF. He argued that the RSF rebels would not be accepted by the Sudanese populace and should not be included in any future resolutions. The persistent conflict has resulted in deep divisions within the country and precipitated a humanitarian crisis.
The RSF’s declaration of a ceasefire may represent a crucial step toward diminishing hostilities and paving the way for peace discussions. Nevertheless, considering the recent aggressions and entrenched distrust, the effectiveness of this ceasefire hinges on the willingness of all parties to cooperate. The international community remains vigilant, hopeful for a sustainable peace in Sudan.
