Surgeon Issues Alarm on Rising Metabolic Syndrome in India

Surgeon Issues Alarm on Rising Metabolic Syndrome in India

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

A prominent bariatric and gastrointestinal surgeon from Gurugram has issued a serious alert regarding a significant health issue spreading throughout India. Dr. Anshuman Kaushal, boasting over seventeen years of experience, stated that India is grappling with more than just one illness—it is facing a cluster of conditions known collectively as metabolic syndrome.

This syndrome arises when the body becomes ineffective at responding to insulin. As this occurs, the body enters a detrimental phase, leading to hormone overload, liver inflammation, and abnormal fat accumulation. These processes can silently advance to fatty liver, elevated blood sugar, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure, thereby increasing the likelihood of heart attacks and other serious health complications.

In a video released on November 17, Dr. Kaushal elaborated that this health issue is escalating rapidly in India, with numerous individuals potentially affected without their knowledge. He highlighted five critical warning signs: an enlarged waist, elevated blood sugar levels, high triglycerides, low levels of good cholesterol, and increased blood pressure. The presence of three of these indicators signifies a substantial chance of metabolic syndrome.

Describing this condition as a quiet danger, Dr. Kaushal noted that it usually develops slowly, often without noticeable symptoms initially. Many individuals might believe they are healthy until the problem becomes severe. Medically referred to as a “gateway disease,” metabolic syndrome paves the way for conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and fatty liver.

Additionally, he analyzed why this syndrome is becoming prevalent in India. Factors like high processed food consumption, sedentary lifestyles, and inadequate exercise have all played a role. Rising stress levels and poor sleep further exacerbate insulin resistance. Over time, these elements lead to a situation Dr. Kaushal termed a “metabolic traffic jam,” where bodily processes cease to function efficiently.

To enhance risk awareness, Dr. Kaushal offered straightforward self-check indicators. A waist measurement exceeding thirty-five inches for men or thirty-one point two inches for women raises concerns. Fasting blood sugar above one hundred milligrams per decilitre, triglycerides exceeding one hundred and fifty, or low levels of good cholesterol are strong warning signs. Blood pressure exceeding one hundred thirty over eighty-five or reliance on BP medications further emphasizes the need for concern.

Medical professionals assert that proactive measures can impede progression. Adopting a balanced diet, maintaining physical activity, ensuring adequate sleep, and regularly monitoring health metrics can shield individuals from long-term complications. Early detection may lead to effective management, whereas neglecting symptoms complicates treatments.

Metabolic syndrome has emerged as a critical public health warning for India. Experts maintain that fostering awareness and implementing basic lifestyle modifications can thwart various serious diseases associated with this syndrome. Dr. Kaushal's message is compelling: recognizing early signs today can safeguard your health tomorrow.
