Taiwan Forces Chinese Research Vessel to Leave Its Waters

Taiwan Forces Chinese Research Vessel to Leave Its Waters

Post by : Shakul

Taiwan's coast guard has successfully directed a Chinese research vessel away from its southern waters following accusations of unauthorized survey activities. Officials characterize this incident as part of China's increasing maritime pressure, which reportedly involves both military and civilian vessels operating closer to the island.

On Thursday, the coast guard tracked the Chinese vessel named "Tongji" approximately 29 nautical miles southeast of Taiwan's southern tip. Despite being outside of restricted waters, the actions of the ship raised security red flags for authorities. Reports indicated that the vessel was deploying equipment into the sea, suspected to be scientific instruments for unauthorized marine surveys.

In response, Taiwan dispatched a coast guard ship to the scene. Taiwanese officials maneuvered their vessel to create turbulence and issued repeated warnings for the Chinese ship to halt its operations and exit the area. According to coast guard reports, the Chinese vessel later withdrew its equipment and altered its course away from Taiwan’s waters.

Taiwan’s coast guard kept an eye on the Chinese ship until Monday to verify its departure from the maritime region. Taiwanese officials accused China of sidelining international maritime laws with unauthorized operations and provocative activities near Taiwan. They have urged Beijing to cease these illegal survey endeavors.

While Chinese authorities have not provided an immediate official response to Taiwan's accusations, state media previously described the "Tongji" as a modern research vessel designed for all-weather operations. It's reported to have capabilities including underwater vehicles and systems for various marine operations.

Taiwan continues to express concerns regarding what it calls "grey zone" tactics employed by China, which involve the use of civilian and research vessels to exert pressure without direct military conflict. Taiwanese officials claim these strategies are meant to strain Taiwan's security resources while escalating political pressures on Taipei.

Tensions between China and Taiwan remain elevated as China asserts its claim over Taiwan. With ongoing military exercises and patrols around the island, Taiwan is enhancing its coastal security and strengthening defense collaborations with international allies. Analysts suggest incidents like this highlight the critical strategic nature of regional waters and the ongoing instability in cross-strait ties.
