Taiwan is upbeat about a potential phone conversation between Donald Trump and President Lai Ching-te, seeing it as a positive development. However, Taiwanese officials clarified that no arrangements or discussions regarding this call have been officially initiated.
During a parliamentary session in Taipei, Taiwan Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung emphasized that any initiative for direct dialogue lies solely with Trump. He assured that Taiwan's government is ready should such an opportunity become available in the future.
A conversation between the leaders of the U.S. and Taiwan would be historically significant, marking the first official communication since 1979, when diplomatic recognition shifted from Taipei to Beijing under the "One China" policy.
The prospect of this phone call has captured international attention, with China firmly opposing any formal exchanges between Taiwan and foreign entities. Beijing views Taiwan as part of its territory and has issued stern warnings against actions that could suggest support for Taiwanese independence.
Last week, Trump reaffirmed his desire to speak with President Lai, putting to rest any doubts about his earlier comments being unintentional. President Lai expressed readiness to discuss regional peace and the increasing pressure from China if he gets the chance to communicate with Trump.
This issue has gained greater significance as the U.S. deliberates on a nearly $14 billion arms package for Taiwan. Washington had previously sanctioned a substantial weapons deal last year, demonstrating its ongoing support for Taiwan's defense efforts.
Taiwanese officials reiterated that relations with Washington remain steady, despite heightened regional tensions. Both parties have assured that U.S. policy towards Taiwan is consistent, even amid the latest meetings between Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
The situation is being closely monitored across Asia, as any Trump-Lai dialogue could influence U.S.-China relations and the security landscape in the Indo-Pacific region.
