In a telephone conversation, Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul connected with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to explore avenues for enhancing bilateral cooperation. Their dialogue was marked by a positive and friendly tone, exemplifying the enduring partnership between the two nations. Prime Minister Carney also expressed condolences regarding the passing of Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendira Debyavati and extended an invitation for the Thai leader to visit Canada, while Anutin reciprocated with an invitation for Carney to come to Thailand.
Milestone in Diplomatic Relations
Both leaders acknowledged the robust ties shared by their countries, noting that 2026 will celebrate 65 years of diplomatic relations. They viewed this milestone as a chance to reinforce cooperation in multiple areas, especially trade, investment, education, and fostering people-to-people exchanges. The commitment to close diplomatic relations and future collaboration was reiterated.
Trade Focus and Future Agreements
The conversation prominently featured discussions on economic relations, with both Prime Ministers expressing their intent to finalize the ASEAN–Canada Free Trade Agreement (ACAFTA) negotiations this year. They also considered the potential for a bilateral Thailand–Canada Free Trade Agreement to enhance business and investment opportunities between the two countries.
Security Collaboration Enhancement
The leaders emphasized the importance of bolstering security cooperation to tackle shared regional issues. They agreed to increase military collaborations and to intensify efforts against transnational crime, specifically targeting online fraud and cybercrimes. Canada's Support for Thailand's OECD Aspirations
Prime Minister Anutin articulated Thailand’s aspiration to join the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), reflecting the government's strategy to align its laws and regulations with global standards. In response, Prime Minister Carney assured Canada’s complete support for Thailand’s application to join the OECD.
