Thailand is set to launch an initiative focusing on eco-friendly farming and rural tourism, following a visit by Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Piyarat Tiyapairat to Chiang Rai Province. The tour emphasized sustainable durian farming, cooperative enhancement, and creative agricultural tourism efforts.
During the visit to Mae Chan and Mae Sai, Piyarat engaged with young farmers and local agricultural organizations aiming to elevate high-value agricultural products. Notably, the renowned “Nang Non lava soil durian,” cultivated in volcanic soil near Doi Nang Non mountain, was showcased for its exquisite aroma, firm texture, and favorable late harvest timeframe that allows farmers to secure better market prices.
Members of the Nang Non San Ton Pui Durian Community Enterprise appealed for government assistance in improving infrastructure, processing facilities, and freeze-drying capabilities to enhance production and boost export opportunities. Additionally, plans to enhance local reservoirs and irrigation systems were discussed to bolster agricultural resilience in the area.
Deputy Minister Piyarat urged the community enterprise to formalize as a cooperative, accessing low-interest loans and more government support initiatives. Authorities also considered linking durian farms with Tham Luang-Khun Nam Nang Non National Park to develop eco-friendly one-day agricultural tourism routes.
The ministry also evaluated the Mae Sai Agricultural Cooperative known for its eco-friendly operations and transparent financial practices. This cooperation employs solar energy technology, reportedly cutting electricity expenses by nearly 50 percent, serving as a benchmark for sustainable farming practices.
Furthermore, officials assessed a proposed irrigation scheme to divert water from the Mae Sai River for over 20,000 rai of agricultural land in Sri Mueang Chum Subdistrict. Authorities believe this venture can significantly boost water management and minimize farmland contamination risks in the vicinity.
The field trip also reviewed innovative rice farming techniques practiced by the Rak Thinn Koet New Theory Agriculture Group, utilizing alternating wet-dry cultivation combined with Azolla plant systems to lessen greenhouse gas emissions and enhance crop productivity.
At the conclusion of the visit, agricultural materials such as mushroom blocks, organic fertilizers, bio-fertilizers, and vegetable seeds were provided to local farmers as part of a drive to reduce production costs and endorse modern sustainable agriculture practices in northern Thailand.
