Thailand kicked off the 2026 edition of its “Youth Preserving Thai Music” initiative at a special ceremony in Bangkok, hosted by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. This program is focused on engaging youth with traditional Thai music, fostering creativity, discipline, and confidence through musical arts.
The event, held on May 15, 2026, took place at the Phannana Building in Bangkok's Dusit District. Attendees included government officials, music educators, artists, committee representatives, and young participants rallying behind this national cultural effort.
Officials have detailed that this initiative features various competitions and performances across genres such as Luk Krung, Luk Thung, and contemporary Thai music. The overarching goal is to maintain Thailand's rich cultural identity while creating platforms for emerging musical talent.
In his address, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul emphasized the significant role of music in helping youth cultivate essential life skills aside from mere entertainment. He discussed how musical engagements nurture discipline, responsibility, teamwork, creativity, and self-expression while bolstering self-confidence among the youth.
The Prime Minister pointed out that traditional Thai music encapsulates the nation’s language, culture, and social practices. He noted that music from various eras allows young people to gain insights into Thai heritage and instills pride in their national traditions.
Recalling the enthusiasm displayed by students during last year’s competition, Anutin mentioned that the project serves as a vital avenue for encouraging young talent and generating fruitful opportunities for future generations in Thailand.
Government representatives underscored the importance of collaboration among public institutions, educators, musicians, and cultural bodies in supporting this initiative. They are optimistic that such partnerships will help secure the long-term viability of this cultural project.
The Thai government reiterates its commitment to initiatives that enhance youth development while safeguarding national cultural values. There are aspirations for the project to grow and inspire more involvement in Thai music and the performing arts.
The ceremony concluded with Prime Minister Anutin joining the performers on stage to sing the well-loved Thai song “Kho Phop Nai Fan,” originally by the renowned Suntaraporn band, which drew enthusiastic applause from students, artists, and guests.
