In a bid to bolster its cultural diplomacy, Thailand has engaged in significant talks led by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul with Khaled Ahmed El-Enany Ali Ezz at UNESCO's Paris headquarters. The discussions revolved around enhancing partnerships in cultural heritage, education, sustainable tourism, and amplifying Thailand's soft power on the global stage.
Thailand is championing the inclusion of its “Thai Traditional Dress” in UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Officials emphasized that this initiative serves not just to safeguard the nation’s cultural identity but also to promote the artistry of textiles and the historical significance of Thai garments globally.
Ratchada Thanadirek, a spokesperson for the government, noted that this nomination is a tribute to Queen Sirikit’s lifelong dedication to preserving and internationalizing Thai silk, fabrics, and traditional designs. Thai authorities believe that achieving UNESCO recognition would elevate global awareness of the country’s rich intangible cultural legacy.
Moreover, the talks heavily focused on fostering sustainable tourism. UNESCO representatives applauded Thailand’s dedication to harmonizing tourism development with the safeguarding of its cultural and natural resources. The nation currently boasts eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites and is committed to ongoing conservation alongside economic growth.
Prime Minister Anutin expressed optimism that Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan might be considered for UNESCO World Heritage status in the upcoming 48th session of the World Heritage Committee set to convene in South Korea later this year.
Additionally, both parties explored potential educational collaborations, including the planning of a significant Global Education Meeting for 2027. The talks underline a growing partnership between Thailand and UNESCO aimed at furthering education, science, cultural exchange, and sustainable development initiatives.
UNESCO’s Director-General reportedly commended Thailand’s proactive role in international partnership efforts, greeting the increased involvement of Thailand’s private sector in projects related to sustainable tourism and cultural preservation. Analysts indicate that this meeting reflects Thailand’s broader strategy of leveraging culture, heritage, and tourism as crucial instruments of global soft power.
