The Ministry of Transport in Thailand is driving a significant reform initiative aimed at enhancing the nation's transport infrastructure. In a recent meeting led by Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakarn in Bangkok, officials coordinated closely with the Senate’s Transportation Committee to address various critical issues in public transport, infrastructure improvements, and safety measures while seeking to lower transport costs for citizens.
Top officials from the Ministry and the Senate committee, chaired by Wuttichat Kalyanamit, convened to identify and prioritize pressing transportation challenges nationwide. They underscored the importance of collaboration between executive and legislative bodies to push forward essential reforms and infrastructure initiatives that are vital for public welfare.
Among the essential measures discussed was the Integrated Ticketing Act, aimed at streamlining public transport operations across the country, which is expected to reduce commuter costs. Furthermore, progress was reviewed on the Rail Transport Act and amendments to the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand Act to enhance the country’s rail infrastructure efficiency.
The meeting also acknowledged the repercussions of changing global fuel prices on residents and public transport services. The government has pledged to keep fares for buses and other transport modes stable to mitigate the financial burden on users. Additionally, over 2 billion baht has been allocated in financial support for transport operators, including various public transport sectors like taxi services and minibuses.
Discussions also highlighted road safety, particularly concerning overloaded trucks. Authorities resolved to implement advanced Weigh-In-Motion technology for better enforcement against overloaded vehicles, with a pilot system already operating in Saraburi province aimed at reducing accidents and damage from illegal overloading.
Moreover, the Ministry of Transport presented plans for a unified digital platform for the GPS tracking of freight vehicles. This system is intended to facilitate legal management of extra cargo loads while minimizing reliance on illegal practices.
Lastly, the Southern Economic Corridor project, also known as the Land Bridge, was discussed. This project, covering an estimated 90 kilometers, aims to notably cut down transportation time and logistics costs in southern Thailand, with the government actively seeking private investments to ease state financial pressures and ensure sustainable economic benefits.
In closing, Minister Pipat reaffirmed the government’s dedication to creating an inclusive, safe, affordable, and environmentally conscious transport system. He emphasized the importance of continuous engagement with experts to enhance transportation services and contribute positively to Thailand’s economic advancement.
