Thailand Aims for Extended Stays in Ayutthaya Tourism Initiative

Post by : Shakul

The Thai Ministry of Tourism and Sports has initiated a transformative plan to position Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya as a premier, sustainable tourism hub. On May 6, 2026, Tourism and Sports Minister Mr. Surasak Panjaroenvorakul led a key tourism development meeting at the Krungsri River Hotel, primarily focusing on strategies to enhance tourist spending and promote overnight visits while ensuring local communities benefit economically.

Attendees included a range of senior government officials, tourism sector executives, local leaders, and business representatives. Present were the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, the Ayutthaya Province Governor, and representatives from various tourism development agencies. The meeting emphasized the necessity of developing a tourism model that aligns with contemporary travelers' needs while safeguarding the city's rich cultural heritage.

Minister Surasak pointed out that Ayutthaya was chosen as the pilot project for this nationwide discussion due to its significant historical relevance and tourist appeal, attracting millions annually. However, the province encounters considerable challenges that impede its economic growth and impact local enterprises adversely.

A pressing issue discussed was the overwhelming number of day-trippers; nearly 90% of tourists only spend a few hours exploring before heading to Bangkok or nearby areas. This transient tourism leads to low average spending of 1,800 to 2,000 baht per person, significantly below Ayutthaya's potential as an international heritage site.

To address this, local tourism leaders proposed several initiatives designed to motivate tourists to extend their stays. A significant proposal includes the River Night Lighting project, which aims to install solar-powered illumination at 12 key historical sites along the riverbanks, enhancing evening sightseeing and nighttime river cruises to attract both domestic and international tourists.

Another key proposal was the development of Global Muay Thai Branding. Officials seek to elevate the renowned Wai Kru Muay Thai ceremony to an international cultural event that draws athletes and martial arts aficionados from around the world. This initiative aims to fortify Thailand's cultural influence and cultivate a distinct tourism identity for Ayutthaya.

Discussions also covered modern tourism technologies and inclusive travel plans, with ideas for a Smart Tourism and Data Center to analyze tourist behavior and refine planning efforts. Infrastructure enhancements will also be evaluated to better accommodate senior travelers, people with disabilities, and affluent international visitors looking for comfortable, accessible travel experiences.

Local authorities proposed the establishment of an enduring community-managed walking street and night market to boost nighttime activities and provide additional income for residents. The province is also drafting a long-term master plan to connect tourism routes from the historic island area to surrounding districts via environmentally friendly electric vehicles and newly designed riverside piers for better travel ease.

In closing, Minister Surasak expressed optimism about the successful implementation of the proposed initiatives through collaborative efforts among the government, private sector, and local communities. He affirmed that Ayutthaya has promising potential to emerge as a world-class destination where visitors can enjoy longer stays, increased expenditures, and the desire to return. This innovative tourism strategy, he noted, will be pivotal in bolstering Thailand's economy while responsibly preserving its cultural heritage.
