Understanding the Silent Threat: Chronic Stress and Heart Disease Risk

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

In our fast-paced lives, many individuals find themselves working extended hours, sacrificing sleep, and juggling numerous responsibilities. While one's mental resilience may seem intact, underlying stress can manifest physically in unnoticed ways. Dr. Sermed Mezher, a prominent family medicine practitioner in London, recently shared insights on social media regarding the insidious nature of chronic stress and its serious health implications, particularly its correlation with heart disease.

As Dr. Mezher points out, chronic stress does not always lead to severe symptoms immediately. Instead, it often presents in daily nuisances such as fatigue, mood fluctuations, headaches, or minor discomforts—subtle cues signaling a need for attention. If these signals are overlooked, the body's response intensifies over time.

The physician elaborated that prolonged stress can strain the cardiovascular system by elevating hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. These stress hormones can increase heart rates, raise blood pressure, and provoke inflammation. Over an extended period, these factors heighten the risk of developing heart disease, indicating that individuals experiencing chronic stress may face health issues, even in the absence of other risk factors.

Dr. Mezher warns that enduring stress can trap the nervous system in a constant state of alertness. Essentially, the body remains in a “fight-or-flight” state, complicating relaxation, concentration, or proper sleep. Many describe this experience as an exhausting paradox—feeling fatigued yet unable to unwind, struggling to focus despite a full day’s work.

The digestive tract is similarly impacted; stress can trigger various symptoms including nausea, cramps, bowel irregularities, or aggravations of conditions like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). These manifestations arise from the intricate link between the gut and brain, showcasing how stress upends their natural harmony.

According to Dr. Mezher, chronic stress also disrupts hormonal functions, influencing appetite, energy levels, metabolism, and even reproductive health. This disruption can lead to unexpected changes in weight, energy, and sleep patterns without individuals realizing the root cause.

He highlights key warning signs of chronic stress—headaches, irritability, stomach issues, fatigue, and a pervasive sense of mental exhaustion. Rather than seen as weaknesses, these signals should be recognized as crucial indicators that the body requires rest and care.

The physician encourages individuals to attune themselves to their bodies and understand their limits. Prioritizing rest, establishing boundaries, alleviating stress, and adopting healthy management techniques are essential for safeguarding long-term health. Dr. Mezher cautions that disregarding signs of stress can have detrimental effects on the body over time.

This report is derived from user-generated social media insights, and while the medical claims remain unverified, Dr. Mezher’s message emphasizes the intrinsic connection between mental and physical health, reminding us that everyone, regardless of strength, needs time for rest, balance, and recovery.
