A tragic incident off the coast of Beira, Mozambique, has led to the loss of three Indian nationals, with five others still unaccounted for. This unfortunate event occurred on Friday during a typical crew transfer operation from the shore to a tanker anchored offshore. The Indian community is deeply affected as authorities coordinate search and rescue efforts to locate the missing individuals.
The Indian High Commission in Mozambique confirmed that a launch carrying 14 Indian nationals capsized under uncertain circumstances while navigating the choppy waters near the Beira port. Preliminary reports suggest that adverse weather conditions may have contributed to the accident, and investigations are currently underway to ascertain the incident's cause.
“This tragic event has brought about profound sorrow,” stated the Indian High Commission. “Three of our nationals have perished, and five remain missing. Our thoughts are with the grieving families, and we are offering complete assistance to them.”
The High Commission reported that five Indian nationals have been rescued following the incident. One survivor is receiving medical attention at a Beira hospital, while the others are confirmed to be safe. A consular representative has arrived to assist the rescued individuals and oversee their needs.
The capsize occurred nearly at the completion of the crew transfer. Maritime sources indicated that the small launch boat, transporting crew to a larger offshore vessel, suddenly overturned, with some passengers managing to cling onto debris while rescue efforts by passing vessels occurred. Tragically, others were lost to powerful currents.
Search and rescue operations remain active, with local authorities, Mozambique’s maritime teams, and the Indian High Commission collaborating closely. An immediate investigation into safety protocols surrounding offshore crew transfers in the region has been instigated.
The Indian High Commission has expressed deep sadness over the incident in multiple posts on X. “We send heartfelt condolences for the loss of lives, including three Indian nationals in the boat accident near Beira port,” stated the mission. “Our team is in contact with local authorities and victims’ families to provide dedicated support.”
Additionally, the High Commission is keeping a close watch on the situation, maintaining dialogue with Mozambican officials and liaising with Indian companies employing crew members aboard the capsized vessel. A thorough investigation is anticipated to establish what led to this tragedy.
“We are working closely with the authorities in Mozambique,” stated an embassy spokesperson. “Our focus remains on ensuring the safe return of those missing and taking care of the survivors impacted by this event.”
The search for missing Indian nationals has been escalated since Friday. Vessels from the Mozambican coast guard and divers are conducting thorough sweeps of the vicinity around the Beira port, supported by helicopters in aerial reconnaissance. Experts highlight that the occurrence underscores the pressing need for enhanced safety measures for offshore transfers, especially in regions with unpredictable weather.
“Currents off Beira can be exceedingly powerful,” noted a maritime safety officer. “Even seasoned crew members face perils if safety measures are not stringently followed. This incident is a sobering reminder of the hazards inherent in seafaring work.”
Meanwhile, Indian officials are actively engaging with the families of the deceased and missing individuals, providing consular support and facilitating discussions with local authorities. The High Commission is undertaking identification processes for the deceased, with plans for repatriation to follow formalities.
As news of the incident reached India, families of the affected crew members awaited urgent updates. Many of those aboard were linked to an international shipping line. “We just want confirmation that our brother is safe,” expressed a relative of a missing crew member from Kerala. “Each moment feels like an eternity.”
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs is apprised of the developments and has instructed the High Commission to ensure that prompt updates reach families. Local Mozambican officials have committed to cooperating fully in ongoing rescue operations.
The incident off Mozambique spotlights the increasing dangers faced by Indian mariners globally. Thousands of Indians are engaged in the shipping and maritime sectors, often contending with challenging conditions far from home. This tragedy highlights the urgent necessity for stringent safety protocols in maritime operations.
As the search continues, prayers and messages of solidarity are flowing in from across India and Mozambique. “We anticipate a safe resolution for those still unaccounted for from the boat accident,” the High Commission reiterated in a recent message. “Our commitment to this search will not waver until every effort is made.”
