To Lam Celebrates 120 Years of Hanoi National University

Post by : Shakul

On May 16, 2026, Vietnam’s General Secretary and President To Lam delivered a pivotal address during the 120th anniversary of Hanoi National University. The ceremony also commemorated the institution's receipt of the esteemed First-Class Labor Order, acknowledging its vital contributions to education, science, and national advancement.

Addressing an audience of senior government officials, educators, students, and international dignitaries, To Lam hailed Hanoi National University as a beacon of Vietnamese scholarship and intellectual achievement. He recognized its historical role in fostering generations of talented individuals pivotal to the nation’s independence and progress.

Reflecting on its rich legacy dating back to its origin as the University of Indochina in 1906, To Lam noted that the university is one of Southeast Asia’s first modern, multidisciplinary institutions, playing a significant role in shaping Vietnam's higher education landscape.

The leader also recalled President Ho Chi Minh’s significant connection to the university post-1945, underscoring his belief in education as crucial for building a robust and sovereign nation. To Lam emphasized that Hanoi National University has served as a vital training ground for intellectuals and future leaders amid national struggles and recovery.

During his speech, he outlined seven key priorities for the future development of Hanoi National University. He urged the institution to emerge as a premier academic center in Asia and aspire to be among the world's top universities, targeting a spot in the top 100 in Asia by 2030 and the top 300 globally by 2035.

To Lam stressed the significance of embracing innovation, digital advancements, AI, semiconductor research, biotechnology, renewable energy, and advanced materials science. He called for the university to evolve into a national hub for research and technology advancement, directly influencing Vietnam’s economic strategy and modernization.

Furthermore, he emphasized the necessity for enhanced collaboration among universities, private sectors, government entities, and international organizations. According to him, academic research should extend beyond the confines of classrooms and have tangible benefits for society, industry, and local communities across Vietnam.

Another pivotal aspect of his address revolved around academic diplomacy and enhancing Vietnam’s global presence. To Lam insisted that Hanoi National University should fortify its international alliances, showcasing Vietnamese culture, knowledge, and innovations on the global stage, a tradition that has seen numerous global leaders and scholars engage with the institution.

He also called for reforms in university governance to enhance autonomy, financial backing, and research infrastructure. The government, he affirmed, would continue backing educational and scientific progress through new policies aimed at transforming Vietnam into a modern entity by 2045.

The ceremony wrapped up with accolades for the university’s educators, researchers, students, and alumni for their enduring contributions to Vietnam's educational and scientific advancement. To Lam expressed unwavering confidence in Hanoi National University’s continued pivotal role in shaping the nation’s future.
