Togo Advocates for Accurate Mapping at the UN

Post by : Shakul

Togo is set to urge United Nations member states to embrace a revised world map that accurately displays Africa's true dimensions. This initiative seeks to replace the long-standing Mercator projection, which has faced criticism for misrepresenting the size of continents and influencing global perceptions inaccurately.

Led by Togo’s Foreign Minister, Robert Dussey, this campaign underscores the need to rectify enduring geographical misconceptions. He highlighted that the prevalent representation of Africa on maps significantly downplays its actual size, fueling distorted narratives within various sectors including education, media, and policymaking.

The Mercator projection, created in the 16th century for maritime navigation, exaggerates the size of areas near the poles—like Greenland and North America—while minimizing regions close to the equator, such as Africa and South America. In actuality, Africa is about 14 times larger than Greenland, yet they appear nearly equal in size on traditional maps.

This effort is part of a larger initiative supported by the African Union, which has entrusted Togo with promoting the “Correct The Map” project. Advocacy groups are encouraging the transition to the Equal Earth projection, launched in 2018, which aims for a more scientifically accurate portrayal of global land areas.

Authorities have announced that a draft resolution is in the works and may be presented during the upcoming session of the United Nations General Assembly. The anticipated vote will provide insight into how various countries respond to calls for improved global representation.

Proponents of this initiative assert that the movement transcends mere cartography, stressing that precise mapping is vital to reshaping global understanding and ensuring that Africa’s true scale, importance, and influence are recognized on international platforms.
