Tragic Shooting Incident Claims Life of Canadian Tourist at Teotihuacan

Post by : Bianca Haleem

A heartbreaking shooting incident at Mexico’s renowned Teotihuacan archaeological site has resulted in the death of one Canadian tourist, as well as injuries to 13 others, officials reported on Monday.

The attack unfolded at the Pyramid of the Moon, a key highlight of the ancient pre-Aztec city situated approximately 50 kilometers from Mexico City. This UNESCO World Heritage site draws millions of global visitors every year.

Authorities revealed that the assailant began firing at tourists before taking his own life. Details surrounding the shooter’s identity remain unclear.

Among the injured were six people directly hit by gunfire, including a Canadian woman, a Colombian female and child, a Brazilian, and two Americans, who were promptly taken to local hospitals.

Additionally, seven other tourists sustained injuries while trying to escape the unsettling situation. Affected individuals hailed from countries including Russia, Colombia, Brazil, and the United States, with most receiving on-site treatment.

Security measures, including local police and the National Guard, were quickly activated following the disturbance. Officials collected a firearm along with a knife and unused ammunition from the site, which was immediately evacuated and cordoned off.

Video footage shared on social media depicted scenes of panic, with tourists seeking shelter or fleeing the pyramid as the gunshots rang out.

Despite Mexico's ongoing challenges with organized crime, incidents involving armed attacks at major tourist attractions remain rare. Teotihuacan continues to be a celebrated destination with over 1.8 million visitors annually.

Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anita Anand, denounced the event as a “terrifying act of gun violence,” while Mexico’s President, Claudia Sheinbaum, initiated a thorough investigation and dispatched response teams to the site.

As investigations progress, authorities are still working to determine the motive behind this tragic act.
